Are there any data processing screen saver things like the SETI@Home one, but not slightly pointless? (Also, my client broke, and kept starting the analysis from scratch. It looked cool though. "What's that you're doing?" "Looking for aliens.")

So anything out there with a minimal download, lots of processing and a nice slowly ticking-away screensaver? Just makes me feel useful :)

Hey, you won't say it's pointless when we finally make contact with the Jedi. Of course, knowing our luck, we'll meet Alf before we meet Yoda.

Luckily, England's barely heard of Alf. The extent of my knowledge of Alf is that he apparently has his own pogs (which can be traded for Bart's soul ;) )

I'm not sure we'd have be much luckier to meet the Jedi, though. Just imagine it - all PCs replaced with droids. Every time you wanted to visit the boards you'd have to deal with a temperamental and sexually ambiguous, yet mysteriously understandable robot who would much rather get back to sleep. And keeps making sarcy comments about your BGII tactics. ("Don't kill him, he looks like an R2 unit!" "He's a dwarf." "Same difference. When do you find the lightsabre?")

Boinc, it's a multi platform idea like Seti that includes programs like Seti but also other projects like Einstein@home etc... You can pick and choose which ones you participate in. I can't remember the URL but you can find it doing a Google search.

A friend of mine talked about one for HIV or cancer research, don't remember the name though.

It's folding@home - bruteforcing research on how proteins fold. Very not-pointless! Many good things can come out of this.

folding@home downloaded and running. Thanks everyone!

Now in several weeks Stanford will know ever so slightly more. I'm such a philanthropist :)

The project LHC@home helps the construction of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
More specifically, it calculates the best position of the magnets that will direct the beam of subatomic elements as they are blasted at near speed of light through a 27km tunnel.

The really cool part is that the LHC will, when it becomes operational, transmit 1500Mb/s to supercomputers around the globe, so that they can analyze the data.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. I just loaded Boinc on a couple of machines and I am doing SETI and Rosetta. Is their a sorcerers place group to join?

    Nope, not yet anyway.

I too run a number of projects, mostly mathmetical, but I ran a few medical ones in the past. Like Find-a-drug and UD-grid. A lot of fun I can tell you.

At the moment I am runing both SETI and Predictor (one of the protine/drug programs) via BOINC, I dont mind donating my computers spare time to odd projects. Beside it is an interesting way to benchmark a computer.
