According to the news collected by TVNZ, video games have become more popular than films and also every third player is female. Here's a clip:

The latest video games are more popular than new blockbuster movies, they are not necessarily blood and gore fests and more than a third of devotees are women, new research has found.

Griffith University professor of marketing Frank Alpert said after a relatively short history, video games now regularly outmuscle movies with the latest offerings often outperforming new hyped up films in opening week sales.

"It's only been around for about 25 years yet the entertainment software industry now outsells the movie box office," Prof Alpert said.

well, duh. The contemporary "blockbuster" movies either suck, kind of suck, or are just slightly lame.

Games are crappier than they used to be. Better graphics, better sound, better whatever. Technically better, but better really? And compare the technical advancement and game achievement ratio. Games in the old times really made use of the technical possibilities they had back then.

Same goes for films. More content, less gift wrap, please. ;) (aka better gameplay, less "new mind-blowing 3D engine" stickers)

Chevalier is right. Nothing has come close to the white knuckle excitement of Space Invaders when the invaders were coming close to mowing down your defences. Plus, you could customise the colours!

Stone age? Golden age, more like. Pacman was the original dungeon crawl!

It's quite telling that the exact quote is "The latest video games are more popular than new blockbuster movies". Blockbuster movies aren't exactly what I'd consider representative of good movies, and neither are the latest games. I also find the next statement, "they are not necessarily blood and gore fests", to be quite ironic considering most of the non-gore fests genres (including adventure games and non-hack and slash RPGs) are dying or dead.

I don't know what to think of this. In a way I'm happy to see gaming being more and more recognised as a legitimate hobby, but I wish it had happened a decade or so ago.
