BioWare's Infinity Engine Source to be Released!

    In a rather remarkable announcement posted on BioWare's news page yesterday, we can read about BioWare's decision to release the source code of the Infinity Engine (used to power the games in the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series, as well as Planescape: Torment) to the general public. Here's the full text of the news:

    BioWare's Thanks to the Fans
    [Mar 31] BioWare Joint-CEOs Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka have a special gift for the most dedicated fans of the phenomenally successful Baldur's Gate saga. After much deliberation and years of pleas from the community, they have finally given in and decided to release the source code of the Baldur's Gate series of games to everyone interested in seeing how these legendary titles were put together.

    In the words of Ray Muzyka: "Talented modification creators who have made some really incredible modifications to extend the gameplay of our titles over the years will now be able to directly interact with the original game content, giving them unprecedented ability to create endless (or dare I say infinite?) new modifications with ease. We are all looking forward to seeing what cool new stuff our creative fans come up with."

    That must be a first... don't think I've ever seen original source code being released. Most companies wouldn't have done that, I don't think. A bit surprising.....but a very cool thing to do. :thumb:
