"I see nothing! I know nothing!"

OK, so technically, it's not German. But it was said frequently by an actor playing an english-speaking German soldier.

    :D

The biggest problem with my german is knowing whether a word is mannlich, weiblich, oder etwas anderes (forgot what it was called), and which nahmfall to use (is there even an english word for that?).

My favourite german sentence must be from a Rammstein t-shirt. It shows the picture of an emergency exit (a figure running towards a door) with the text:

    Erst zerbrennen, dann rennen.

    I love it.

It's a pyromaniac pun: First burn (it), then run (from it).

Rammstein, much more so than Kraftwerk, is the German revenge on American and English music. Quite often folks here are listening to music which texts they dodn't understand. Now the Americans and Brits are in the same situation when they dance to Rammstein.

    :shake: Gut so! :shake:

Belgian beer is better than Dutch beer; that doesn't say much. Belgians have a much greater variety than the dutch, and they are as a rule of thumb sweet. Dutch beer is mostly of the lager variety, and plain boring. And as for variety, German Beer beats them all, natürlich. Not to mention in quality, natürlich.

The EU market forces us to allow import of Belgian and Dutch beers that don't meet the standards of the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot of 1516 - means: It's crap we would sensibly refuse, but Belgians like it. I don't even want to think of what they put into their beers. Gruselige Vorstellung! Vermaledeite Bierpanscher!

    Bierpanscher...

You're lucky we're in the middle of horrendous government formation negotiation talks and Belgium is almost falling apart, otherwise... :p

Yes, very much so. It's in my local dialect, which has a nice way to put things, and to garble grammar. That said, the dialogue is basically the same as in the original movie, just paraphrased. I find it actually quite difficult to properly translate the nuances.

Bion, you must have been talking to Berlin Turks I presume :shake:

    Eh, gehen wir Kaufhof?

    Bad, bad slang :shake:

Now some good German, by one of my favourite poets, Joachim Ringelnatz, a grizly poem, right in time for Halloween I guess ;)

    Hrhr... that's damn right! :D

Here in Germany, everything must be regulated, limited or otherwise "verrechtlich" (I do not think that such a term exists in English, it means something like "standardize everything by jurisdiction").

btw @ Ragusa: I think the quote from Bion is from a German song (Richtig Geil, something like a hymn to Berlin)

(this is the German version of the beloved "you must gather your party before venturing forth") :D :D :D

Don't understand Darth Vader, though suspect Dutch-like influences. Poem rather hilarious. Am doing a presentation auf Deutsch in two weeks, which will be ganz toll.

    Tschüß. :p

Oh and speaking of Turkish Berliners: we've had to read /Kanak Sprak/ and it's dreadfully hermetic.
