A quick question about what should be displayed in the dialogue box when you backstab successfully.

For regular thieves, I get the usual "backstab double/triple/quadruple/quintuple damage" statement, and that's all good.

But for my assassin with x7 multiplier, I get nothing displayed. It just displays the character's name on one line, then skips to the next line to display the damage. Is this normal?

(I was too lazy to raise levels, so I hacked with Shadowkeeper and now I'm worried I screwed something up.)

With my self-made NPC Assassin I don't get to backstab much.

Usually the bad guys die so fast he doesn't get a chance to get in close. ;)

But when he does, I don't remember seeing any text about backstab damage. Just the damage number.

That's what I anticipated, but apparently I haven't been getting that message.

And how come the damage inflicted isn't even a multiple of the backstab multiplier?

For example, say you have x5 backstab, you DO NOT always backstab for 40, 45, 50, 55 etc. damage. You usually get 52 or 67 or something... why??

[IMG] My guess is that you don't get that because the damage formula for a backstab attack is something like:
[X(1dY)]+Z, where X is your backstab multiplier, and Z is your +Damage from a magical weapon, which is added after the multiplier. For example, say you have a weapon that does 1d6+2 damage per hit. With a backstab multiplier of 3, you damage would be between 5 and 20, as compared to normal 3 and 8.

Also, high enough strength adds a little damage to each hit. Some items do, as well.

My assassin with x6 multiplier shows up alright too (it displays "backstabs sextuple damage"), but so far still nothing for x7.

I also noticed around level 18 when you level up, it says "backstab multiplier increased by: -1". What's up with the negative sign? Later on at around level 21 when the x7 multiplier kicks in, it says it increases by -2. (Despite all this, the status screen still shows the correct multiply.)
