    Yeah, the whole tipping thing got me confused too. Never knew quite what to do in restaurants.
    I've been in new south wales since february, and I'd say now is definitely a good time to come. I thought the heat was going to kill me after just leaving an upstate NY winter.
    I've never heard of negativity towards tourists around here, except maybe in some parts of Sydney. Of course, you have to look at the average american tourist. They make me want to pretend I don't speak english sometimes.

    Great point, JSBB. Tipping is generally not done in Australia and New Zealand. When we travel overseas, we get pretty miffed at the idea that we have to pay extra above the advertised prices for things. Why not just incorporate the tip into the price if it is more or less expected that you will pay it?

    Anyway, that rant belongs in another topic. Suffice to say that you do not need to tip in Australia, unless you have experienced some unbelievably spectacular service from your waiter / waitress or taxi driver. No tipping the guy who carries your bags in a hotel or any similar nonsense.

    Its similar in Ireland to Australia, in terms of tipping. In the US you are expected to *always* leave a tip, which is strange to say the least.

    My girlfriend went to Austarlia some time ago. She says that Sydney is great. Visit Darling Harbour and the Opera House. If you have time, go to Bondi or ride a hot air balloon. If you're adventurous, go to the outback. Have a great time.

    Not like you'll have a choice. I was in Melbourne this September for 2 weeks: out of the 8 channels in the hotel, 3 of them were Fox Sports, including "Fox Footy", apparently featuring 24 hours of Aussie Rules Football. Those guys must wear the funniest uniforms in professional sporting. Other favs were 2 year old cricket matches, and some weird quasi-sport called IIRC "curling," which is apparently only played by the senior citizens of Australia, Scotland, and Canada. At one point, flipping through the channels, 6 out of the 8 stations were showing a sporting event. Plus, the hotel had a bunch of weirdly scarved people from Port Adelaide and Brisbane, there for the Aussie Rules championship.

    Seriously tho, I had alot of fun in Melbourne and Sydney, and only wish I had more time to tourist around. Make sure you research restaurants; you can eat really well in Australia...
