The translated manga Berserk will be on sale soon! Waits for all the expected  and going on and on about how manga, anime and anything japanese are stupid, dumb and lame, etc etc.

Yes, yes, you prefer to criticise Shakespeare, Milton and other higher forms of 'true' literature. We respect your intellectuality. Now please go away and try not to bang into the walls too often when you're walking due to that rod stuck up your rectum.

The story of Berserk is truly epic and the art is great. If you have the spare cash, go pick up volume 1! It's well worth the money. For those who have watched the anime, the manga is a thousand times better than the anime, plot-wise and characterisation-wise.

Being able to read Mandarin, I have already acquired all the Hong Kong editions of Berserk up till Book 26. :D

You non-oriental folks will just have to wait, though. :p

Ah, yes, we're all against Anime and other Eastern art stuff here. We've just kept silent about it for a while.

So, do you mind elaborating on what Berserk is about?

I remembered downloading one episode of the series, but I didn't have the right decoder, so it was played upside down and inside out.

But as far as I know, it is about some kid who is going to be a hunter, just like his old man, who went missing. Or is that another anime? :hmm:

Wrong anime, Morgoth. That's HunterXHunter, a well thought out story but incomparable to Berserk.

It's basically about a man's journey seeking vengeance against 5 gods that control the fate and destiny of humanity.

Awesome - I love Berserk! (I just watched volume 2 last night, as a matter of fact!)

I'm not a big manga fan, but for this - I can't wait!

@Shura - Hey, man - don't be so... mean to us "Literature People" - some of us (insert me) don't actually believe in all of that "higher form of art" crap!

@"High-Culture-Literature People" - Sorry, but postmodernism happened - it's time to move out of the nineteenth century, everyone!

I love classic literature myself, but I simply cannot understand sometimes why some readers take themselves so seriously and diss comics/manga or 'lower art forms'. The story in Berserk is an Epic worthy of the Aeneid and the composition is beautifully (and violently) poetic.

Go you, Falstaff! The manga is a 1000 times better than the anime! The anime lacks closure while the manga is still ongoing. I expect it to end in another 20 books or so.

    That'll be episode 45!

Postmodernism did happen, but we don't have to like it. There is another saying that "Sh$t happens" ... we don't have to like that either ;)

@ Mat - True, not everything PM is good - but it did do some nice things for breaking up the high culture nazis. (Although Postmodern Christian Theology is a bit strange...)

    Anyways, brief offtopic rant over.

PS - good to see you back around, Math!

[IMG] Hehe, i watched the anime. And its the best one i watched!

I dont know about manga though. I never was much into comics. Not becouse i'd throw it away or anything like that, but i just didnt get much chance to get my hands on it.
And as much as i saw manga on my screen (I'll rather not mention the source ;) ), it all seemed confused.
But as this is Berserk after all, i'll get it on amazon next time i order another pile of books. Sadly though, that will most probably be in July next year.

By the way... the anime version doest cover the whole story, does it? I'd be rather short if it did.

Manga in itself is not a "lower" form, but so much of it is porn, and weird porn at that... I'm glad to hear any recommendations for truly good and deep manga. I've always been interested in graphic novels, but they're generally too pricey for me, especially since you have to buy so many of them. My $'s already tied up in games, books and music; but if something's really great, I'd be willing to try it out.

[IMG] The anime version lacks a LOT of important plot elements present in the manga: characters, events, superbly drawn fight scenes, etc.

Besides, the anime ends only at book 13. The manga is now currently at book 25 (the Japanese translated to Chinese one, at least).

The story is truly deep and engrossing. Anyone familiar with my work should find the extremely obvious allusions to Berserk. :o :o

I'm an Inuyasha fan myself. But until I got into Inuyasha I used to make fun of the people at ,u school into anime and manga (all those people at my school are complete dorks... of which I am now one) But most of the other series I've looked at, I don't really like. It seems I am a fickle anime/manga fan.

I recently discovered Hong Kong Kung Fu comics. They are published by Comicsone. The artwork and storylines are fantastic.
