From one of fantasy books I've got a party that consists of:
    - Dwarven Battlerager (Axes)
    - Dwarven Fighter/Thief (Longsword + Dagger dualwield)
    - Halfling Fighter (Short Bows, Short Swords).

Do you think it will be possible to beat BG2 with that on Insane difficulty or I shoudln't even bother trying?

Evidently, I am worrying about all those mages with loads of protective spells.

You´d need a good mage right from the start - it is possible without (at *normal* setting) but I miss my ready supply of spells quite much. Additionally a cleric would be fine too.

Forgive my ignorance, but what fantasy book inspired that party?

Also, there have been a few other posts on Themed parties, but I havne't seen many on Insane Difficulty.

Has anyone beat it on that level? Is there a benefit to playing that hard (i.e., more experience?)

At the Insane level of play, it's wise to avoid hand-to-hand combat. I played with a party of four Archers, a Druid and a Conjurer. They worked brilliantly as a team and rarely lost any hit points at all. The Druid and Mage provided creature fodder while the Archers killed from a comfortable distance with great celerity. Since Archers also have the Stealth ability, they always shoot first, simultaneously for 40-50 hp damage against one opponent in the first attack alone. Against Mages, use arrows of dispelling against their protective magics.

Mathetais: --> It is a Russian book so you probably don't know it

Well, in a strong belief that a Ranger dc Cleric is one of the most powerful chars available I started a solo game with it. So far I beat Chapter One, Hendak's quests and Lilarcor, and the De'Arnise Hold. The char performs great, I'm planning on bringing 15000 to Shadow Thieves and killing some vamps. Umar Hills will be due next.
