    Winter-een-mas is a week long celebration of video games that lasts from January 25th through January 31st.

    Essentially, yes. Winter-een-mas was started by Ethan, in the webcomic Ctrl+Alt+Del, in a case of brain frostbite. Since then, gamers everywhere rejoice at the end of January.

    I agree but I don't care for the name. Half the world is having summer. Too bad he didn't come up with a name people like Harbourboy can relate to.

    Good point, Nakia. He says that the good things in life should be celebrated but only includes half of the globe in his celebration.

    That's a little unfair... after all, he only came up with the name as part of one of his comic character's, Ethan's, hypothermia-induced senseless ravings. He never thought his reader community would, apparently on just as much of a whim, decide to turn it into an actual holiday, by which time it was a bit late to change the name. I don't even know if he had a big international readership like he does now back when Ethan came up with it... certainly not as many, at least.

    He does mention it in his FAQ on the page: "Winter-een-mas is just a title, just a name. The holiday itself is a celebration of video games. The word 'winter' in the name is just a throwback to the holiday's origins."

    For something that never had a chance to be thought through or planned out until after it began, it seems fair enough.
