This is a problem I experience with all games, but especially with RPGs such as IwD II.

After I have created my characters (which is the only fun thing left) and start the game, I get so damn bored with haveing to do all of Targos again, that I just stop playing. At times, I go play with my new party to see if its fun, but after I have killed a few goblins/skeletons I become bored once more.

This is a big problem for me, and Im wondering if anyone else has this problem, and what to do to solve it.

Well, this tends to always be a problem with any game that has essentially the same 'story' each time you play (i.e. almost any RPG or FPS type game, unless you keep finding new mods or play multiplayer).

The only games that are free from this type of effect are those that are 'random' each time you play (e.g. Civilization, Age of Empires type games).

What I wish is that I could take my IWDII created characters and go play them in a range of other games, mods, worlds etc. Creating characters in IWDII is great but it's a shame that there is only ONE place you can play them (Icewind Gate notwithstanding - if anyone ever come back with a full review of this).

I'm hearing you Bahir, I have the exact same problem, but it was the Ice palace that always stopped my gaming, so infact I've never finished this game!

I have tried it on HoF mode with a Lv1 party, but not being an expert on this game it suffices to say I never got past the docks! :p

So now I just mess about with DaleKeeper2 program thingy, making uber characters and stuff then I just zoom through Targos and part way through the Ice palace but again I get bored with that!

I thought about giving up with this game all together, but I'm the kind of person who hates to leave games uncompleted...no matter how bad! :D

i wouldn't consider IWD2 as a "bad" game, but it DOES lose appeal after you play it through once. how could it not as there are hardly any deviations from the main storyline. subquests are quite few and a number are class and race dependent as well. I'm playing it through only for the 2nd time. I finished it the first time right after it came out. That was... 2 years ago IIRC? Got an unrelated question though: If I started playing Planescape:Torment now for the first time, after playing all the other games hosted on this board, would I have fun doing it? Graphics-wise and all that. Bec. I only played FFVII after playing FFX and the stepdown in graphics was disappointing.

Try soloing... or new (and different) characters that you would never have played before for a renewed challenge!

The real drawback when you become so familiar with a game is that nothing will surprise you anymore (and you start creating your party according to the items, opponents and quests you'll have to go through). Well if you use really different characters and develop new strategies to fit them, things may become more interesting. In the earlier parts of the game you can already notice differences in the dialogues depending on your characters' races and classes (try things you've never done before!).

Alternatively you could try to impose on yourself some limitations: no spellcasters (ouch!) or try to complete the first chapters as fast as possible (not every quest needs to be done to have fun). Play an all-evil party and act accordingly... or RP your PnP party (I might try that one ;) ).

I would like to play Icewind Gate for a change and I wonder if some of you have ever tried that one? (is it possible to go through an entire game without too much hassle?)

Actualy, Planescape:Torment is a game you can play over and over again without being bored with the storyline. Everything you do affects the game so it wont be the same every time. The bad thing, though, is that the dialogues are SO exstensive. Im the kind of person who dont like to read too much on the computer, so it realy bothers me to RP in Planescape. I usualy just scroll down to the dialogue options and pick the one that sounds best. Another problem with Ps:T is the battles. The magics are incredibly cool but there are so few battles through the game that its irritating; you can talk yourself out of most situation if you have enough wisdom (#1 important stat) and intelligence (#2 important stat)

Well, as far as IWD2 is concerned...SOLO it! :D

If you've already done that, SOLO it in HoF mode! Doing those honestly, without messing with Dalekeeper will keep you busy for a long long time! :D

It's not like BG2 either, where you get XP no matter what. Eventually, you stop getting experience so you have to level squat and stuff. Also, the sheer numbers of the enemies are so many in IWD2, you're going to have to be on your toes all the time.

For a real challenge, try going at it solo with a non-melee class. It might seem that magic users at high levels are more powerful...but then, it makes the game much more fun.

    Try a rogue/diviner 1/29, or a Paladin of Mystra/Sorcerer 2/28.

    Cheers.

    Bahir,
I think the problem is for you to come up with a party that will allow you to get through the Ice Palace and not use Dale Keeper. IMO, the hardest part about this game is creating your party because to have a truely effective party, you've got to plan out how they are going to progress. You can't just throw something together and expect to just cruise through every battle. You've got to employ tactics to win in the later fights, you can't just go in and hack 'n slash.

Ice palace? Im not having trouble in the game at all, which might make it boring. I almost never get killed (even playing on insane)

Im just bored with everything, especially targos (I hate the place)

    Bahir,

I'm the same way as you. When I first bought IWD2, back in '02, I spent at least a week making my party. Then when it came time to venture out into Targos I lost interest while doing all of Shawford's quests and stopped playing. I got bored.

For me an RPG is all about story and IWD2 doesn't have one of those stories that pulls you in and keeps your interest, at least it didn't for me anyway. I know I shouldn't have expected this with Icewind Dale but I thought the first one's story held my interest quite well. It was dissapointing because I was highly anticipating IWD2 after playing the crap that was NWN and then no more than a week a later I uninstalled IWD2 and shelved it. :(

Well, here I am today playing it again. This time I'm not going into it with any expectations, as far as story goes, and just enjoying leveling my characters. So far its worked....I made it to Chapter 2. :D

I'm experiencing the same difficulties. I just started over in HoF, but the game just can't keep my attention anymore.

Aye, well it does seem to be rather boring if you're actualy playing it again. Or even for the first time (i've tried twice, didnt finish it yet).

On the other hand, if you're not playing it for a while, say, a few months and reflect on it, it might just pick your interest.
I know this happens to me. I play it for a while, get bored and quit. After some time i remember some of the good things about it and start again. Of course i get bored once again, so i'm in some kind of a loop that lasts as long as i dont remember many of the things about it i didnt like ;)

This time, though, i'm trying to play it a bit differently. When i begin playing i do so for at least a few hours to make some big progress. After that i leave it alone for a week, so i dont get overfed with it. And then i repeat a session, making another part of the game. Every time i stop playing it, i make sure i dont finish in a part i dont like, since that would make it harder to start there again.
    So far it works :)

Oh man, I know what you mean. I got through the prologue for the first time last night, and realized my party was underpowered when I ran into all the orcs at the beginning of Ch. 1. So I rolled up a new party, and I am dreading going through that goblin crap again. :(

I really wish somebody would make something along the lines of Dungeon-Be-Gone for BG2...Targos-Be-Gone? :p

I would love such a mod. I also wish you could reach higher levels and obtain levels more frequently (since making a character and developing it is the only fun thing)

I am currently playing it with a party of 2 that has no arcane spellcasters. This has created some interesting challenges. I got stuck with Sherincal for ages until I realised that Zack sold Fire Shield Red and Protection from Electricty specifically so that melee-only characters could get past her. So that was a new challenge.

    There's Undead Targos mod.

It gets a bit more out of your cleric in the beginning and of course it changes the game in Targos.
I havent tried it yet, but i'm told it's really good.

Heh, I hear y'all - IMO IWD2 is the least of all the BoM covered games I've ever played (mind you, I didn't play all), not counting the misery (sp?) that was called NWN OC SP.
It lacked the character interaction, the gripping storyline that made me love BG2 and despite the fact it has it's moments of epic that made me feel on top of Ab'Eir'Toril and taking off, it simply doesn't give me the "Look at us, we bad" feeling that I got from my high-level BG2 party, just cruising down the streets in Athkatla slums.
I'd recommend to you, Bahir, that you pick up the original Deus Ex, if you haven't already.
It is IMO the trueest (sp?) RPG for you could really be anything you wanted, from a Rambo-style machinegunner, to a stealthy melee-specialist, to a l33t h4x0rz who turns the tables on his foes using their automated security.
It's one of very few games that I finished several times, and enjoyed each time.
Also, TES3: Morrowind is so damn big it will take you ages to see all of it, and even bigger with the expansions (although I don't have these) and it's really very good, it's the first game in a LONG time that made me wonder if, maybe, something can approach BG2 in coolness factor.
Be aware though, that Morrowind takes some time and dedication to fully appreciate, and it's unlikely that your first Char will let you have muchos fun - and whatever you do; do NOT use the premade classes.
Morrowind also has a bighuge mod-community which should expand your pleasure further, and has some good fanfic and fun fansites.
    The game is roxorz
A very long post, but I believe that this information should keep you busy for weeks, even months, depending on how intensively you game even a year.

Im getting Greyhawk when I get my new computer, it seems like a REALY good game (played it at a friends house)

I utterly loath the graphics in nwn and morrowind, if it would have looked like bg2 och iwd (with a fixed wiew) I would have gotten them, but I realy hate the graphics in them.

It's real good, and much tougher to solo, even down in the Docks. Definitely one to try if you're bored with the original.
