I personally like Keldorn cause of his Inquister abilities (True sight and dispel magic), along with that he is the only npc that can use HA, though I admit that I don't have a lot of experince with Mazzy (though some).

IMHO Keldorn is better to use for he's stronger and tougher, best of all his truesight and dispel magic power is awesome, plus only he can wield Carsomor.

Definitely Keldorn he's a d*mn good fighter and with Gauntlets of Dexterity he is an excellent shot with his crossbow. His True sight and dispel magic where also lifesavers in several key battles as well due to their quick casting time.

see the above post...Keldoren is a bad ass good guy, esp. with the gauntlets of Dex. And if you can increse his strength even better.

However, if you like a GREAT archer, and I DO, take Mazzy! She has good hp, and ***** in short bows. Mazzy saved my ass several times. I have fond memories of her hasted, hurling arrows at dragons!

Personally, I too BOTH mazzy and Keldoren, and I have NO complaints.

Mazzy is the neatest character I've ever seen. If she could wield HA I'd pick her in a second.. Unfortunately she cannot.

HA, took me a minute. I was like HA? What is he talking about. Then it hit me - Holy Avenger. Some things aren't meant to be abbreviated.
Hmm Mazzy or Keldorn. If you can't have both, and you want someone who yes wield the almighty Carsomyr or HA whatever you want to call it, and someone who can True Sight and Dispel Magic up the wazhoo choose Keldorn. If you want someone who can shoot a mean arrow or two and after time develop skills in some type of melee weapon that you choose, then choose Mazzy.

[IMG] You are talking about my two fav npc's in BG-2 .... so my advice is: Take both of them - if you play good, they are perfect for your party.

-Keldorn: He can wield Carsomyr and his true-ssight and diespell magic are awesome. Once he has the gaunts of dex he is just a marvellous allround (melle & ranged) fighter.

-Mazzy: Give her the bow of the tuigan and she is a mashine gun, even though she's restricted to short-swords she is great in melee once she got a strength girdle (and when you take her to ToB you can further specialise her in whatever weapon you like). She has great saving throws and can wear a full plate.

[IMG] Both NPCs have their good AND BAD sides. The same is with Keldorn and Mazzy.

I said almost 1500 times that noone needs Carsomyr in party (unless you play as paladin), that Keldorn's Dispel Magic is the same as of clerics or mages and that True Sight can be casted by any mage or be substituted with thiefs' detect illusion.
But if you like his looks, take Keldorn, be my guest.
He's not so much tank, I always kick him outta party when moving on chapter 3. And sell Carsomyr of course. And buy Staff of Rhynn.

Mazzy? She is indeed asskicking NPC. She never died in my party - that is what I remember. Ok, I mainly used her with bows in late game, but before it...
Too bad she is not available for romance - IMHO she looks better than that Aerie tragicomedian.

The last - we can't choose instead of you.
If you can't choose between those two, but must spam "this vs that" question, take some TeamBG utils or hex editor and make an NPC of your own who will be both Keldorn and Mazzy in one.

[IMG] Extremist, I have to disagree with you, Keldorn's dispell magic is better that that of any cleric or mage. The inquisitor's dispell magic is of double pally level, so it is an excessively powerful tool.
So a lvl-10 pally has the the power of a lvl-20 cleric or mage and on lvl-15 he equals a lvl-30 mage or cleric ..... in short: Keldorn excells in countering and disabling enemy magic protections (or in dispelling mind affecting spells on party members).

[IMG] And not only is Keldorn's Dispel Magic better, he gets Dispel Magic and True Sight as innate abilities, thus freeing up spell slots for clerics and mages in the party for other spells. Efficiency.
Mazzy is efficient too when it comes to combat, especially missle combat, but not just missle. As a player you get to decide what melee weapon you want Mazzy to become good with. Efficiency.
    So take your pick.

[IMG] Ragusa, do you want me to make an item with ability to cast Dispells: one of Keldorn's, one of mage's and one of cleric's?

Maybe that would make you see the "difference" that is not in effect but in casting time. Then again, you can always get casting time booster items for mages and clerics.

ADMIT - there is no actual reason to take Keldorn unless someone is in love with his looks. :p

A gentle addendum: if you're fond of Viconia at all, you probably don't want Keldorn. I found Mazzy incredibly annoying while Valygar was in my party, but at least she doesn't break out and try to kill anyone when your guard's down.

    [IMG] Dear Extremist,
I don't care about Keldorn's casting times when I can be sure his dispell magic will wreck any magic protection in the area. And the casting time of an innate ability usually is relatively short.
I also don't care about Carsomyr's dispell magic, this one is nearly useless. The dispell magic *I* talk about is in the lower right corner of Keldorn's character screen behind the golden star icon, just in case you missed it :D :D :p :p

I have to agree with Ragusa here, I think Keldorn's dispell ability always works on almost anything in opposite to what cleric/mage dispell thing works.

Though about having him in the party for it, I dont know, I think my party is the best there is without him

    Geez...

This won't be the first time I'm alone against this whole community - remember my flames on :-X util?
    I really don't need this.

Take Keldorn if you love him so much. Bah!
    I'm outta here.

I have played with both Keldorn and Mazzy. As said before, each is **best** at different things. However, both are quite playable regardless of whether or not you really play to their individual strengths.

Personally, my most enjoyable experience with either was with Mazzy. My PC was also an archer and we picked up Jan for (theiving) company. The three of us only picked up other NPCs for their subquests then dropped them as soon as possible. I am an artilleryman at heart so having 3 archers (remember that Jan uses his crossbow) running around zapping monsters from a distance was really cool. The only problem was having to carry healing potions before I got a bag of holding.

I think that picking up Keldorn, Mazzy and Yoshimo (and ultimately Imoen) only to limit them to (cross)bows would be an interesting "all-bow" party to try. Let them carry and use short swords for melee weapons to encourage the "shoot first, swing last" gameplay.

Hmm.. what an idea! I think I will go try that after I finish IWD again.

Poor Extremist :p The Dispel magic gets more efficient with each level.
    http://www.gamebanshee.com/baldursgateii/spells/magelevelthree.php

But even though it gets better, I still haven't found an excellent use for keldorn in my party.
    Now the One on One

    KELDORN:
    KIT:
True sight. I easily make up for this with my thief's detect illusion. Takes one round. But so does the spellcasting. In those rare occasions that my thief can't work I have stashed handfulls of "Oracles". They can be picked up from almost any Random Cityencounters. My mage then spends a round casting it.

Immune to hold and Charm is a definate plus!

+2 to saves a definate plus

Dispel magic: Of course this is a neat trick to pull. and perhaps the most crucial part of Keldorn.

This has to make up for the following:
    Cannot use Lay on Hands
    Cannot cast Priest spells
    Cannot Turn Undead
    Cannot Cure Disease

All very neat things on Later levels. But not for Keldorn. So for Now he is a Hyped up Fighter. which cost him a limited weaponspec. and the need for more XP in comparison to Mazzy.

RACE: Mazzy has a +4 saving Throw Vs. Spells Which is Extremly usefull later on when fighting hardcore mages.

    ABILITY SCORES:
    STRENGHT:
Keldorn (17) isn't all that muscle. We are unfortunately used to at least 17. so he is definately below average as a tank. Further he is limited in weapon spec. He has a great sword though, and can wield Carsomyr. Full Compensation!
Mazzy (15) doesn't need Strenght much. And she can get a lot of great short bows and arrows to fire.

    DEX
Keldorn has 7 in Dex, and his armor doesn't make up for his lack in AC. Against hard monsters he often needs healing afterwards or in between.

Mazzy(18) can hit almost every time(fighter) (++++ in bow) (plus her own magic bow). With 3 attacks per round she is a pain to enemies. Easy to redirect to new enemies, and a mage killer with her low Weaponspeed and long range. Especially when she has an outrageos amount of magic arrows that are found everywhere in BG2. Further When she shoots the arrows I can have someone else fire all those great bolts too. Instead of just dumping them.

CONSTITUTION: Keldorn (17) He is definately solid.

Mazzy(16) very many hp for an archer. Makes her capable of going in close combat too especially against mages with her low Save Vs. Spells

INTELLIGENCE: Noting to note on both

WISDOM: Keldorn get a bonus to Save Vs. Mind spells.

CHARISMA: Keldorn (18) is a leader. But I have never played a group where I didn't at least have someone with 16-17. And the it really doesn't matter that much. His 18 is an asset if everyone else has below 16

I have played both a lot. I can easily find use for Mazzy in every group I have played. And she is always efficient. She is a great stand in for close combat. Excellent armorclass when she fights with her own magic shortsword and a shield. She is a great secondary tank considering that she is a supreme archer.

Keldorn I call my Luxury-toy. I find that I draw him away from hard battles due to wounds. In and out. He can shoot the crossbow and I have him doing that once in a while. Later in the game when I have stuffed him with a bunch of magical items he gets great.Dex enhancements and strengt enhancements. But hey. Any fighter would be great with gauntless of Dex and girdle of frost giant strengt. I feel that he is an average fighter and I only keep him for two reasons. His Dispell Magic. and that he eventually will wield Carsomyr. Primarily to have him wield Carsomyr against Kangaxx to be precise.

So If You ask me I think Mazzy is a far more Colorfull and versatile NPC that Keldorn.

Keldorn is good, but Mazzy is irreplaceable (even if you are playing an Archer). So in my party, I've planned it so I can take both.
