Why is Edwin so powerful?

Most specialist mages can cast a max of 6 spells; 5 for generalists. But Edwin can cast a max of 8 or more spells per level. Is it that necklace he's wearing?

Also, why does Bigby's crushing hand use the yellow, enchant/charm coil when it says it is an evocative spell? It should have the red, pulsating orb.

    1. Yes, he gets the extra spells because of his amulet. I believe it grants him two extra spells per level, but I'm not sure. Check the item description.

    2. I don't know, never use that spell anyway.

The item description only says that it is inlaid with his family birthright, or some such. It says nothing about the additional spells. Yes, it grants him 2 additional spells/level.

If you really want him spell heavy, give him the ring of wizardry (extra 5th, 6th, and 7th level spell) and the ring of acuity (2 extra 2nd level spells, 1 extra 3rd and 4th level spell).

[IMG] IIRC the amulet only grants him one extra spell per level. The other extra spells are probably from ring of wizadry/acuity.
I may be wrong, but I'm prety sure the above is correct.
BTW my sorceress could kill Edwin any day :D :) :D

If you look in his character sheet, it says something like "Level 2: 5 + 3" or something like that. Or that might have been in BG 1

    He is powerful because:

    1) His conjurer spell bonus (1 extra spell)
    2) his amulet (2 extra spells)
    3) Nether Scroll (+20 lore ,+1 bonus to all Saving throws)

NPC's typically have bonuses that you can't get with self-created characters. It makes up for the less-than-optimal stats and proficiencies that they offer, and thus encourages you to use them rather than create your own (in addition to the dialogues, quests, etc.)

[IMG] Edwin is THE mage of the series, you can't create a more powerful one (spell-wise). And his personality is - interesting. ;)

I think "Edwina" is even better.

"I feel your stares! Die! Die!"

@ Stu: That's a big call - Edwin is amazing, especially at higher levels. His only real weakness in a mage battle is the fact that he has no Divination spells (mainly True Sight), but Glitterdust should take care of the typical SI:Div + SI:Abj + Imp. Invisibility trigger.
