I don't hate Illithids so much. Of course, the first ones I had to fight (the ones in the sewers, for the Hammer of Thunderbolts) were a real pain in the... well, they were really tough. I managed to defeat them only by sending forward Viconia with about 15 protection spells cast (immune to pretty everything, and AC -20 to minimize INT drain). But later, as soon as you get Skeleton Warriors and *Mordenkainen's Swords* they're not that troublesome.

What I really hate are all the fighters or thieves who use potions. You can't stop them, and before you can kill them, they've either a) drunk 4 potions of healing and got back to full health or b) got invisible and killed your mage

Chaotic Commands protects you from everything but the Intelligence Drain of the Mind Flayers. I took on the entire Mind Flayer dungeon and the lair in the sewers with Chaotic Commands only and was never stunned by a Mind Blast though I and Minsc were hit by many.

Before trying Chaotic Commands everyone in my party was stunned by Mind Blasts.

Chaotic Commands do NOT protect you from the stun effect, as this is not a state of mind. The only way to protect agains stun effects is using Free Action, and the intelligence drain shuld be easyli counteracted by a Greater Restoration or Protection from Negative Energy (cast this before battling the flayers).

The best way to battle the flayers is by casting a Pit Fiend (remember protection from evil) then cast domination at the pit fiend and have it battle the flayers. To protect the pit fiend cast a Death Spell when it reaches the flayers, as the Umber Hulks can quite quickly bring it down.

Now you might wonder why the pit fiend should be dominated, simple, if you don't then you'll not get the xp from the monsters it kills...

Potions of Clarity. Very handy :)

Protection from Negative Energy won't do anything to protect you from Intelligence Drains. I had the Amulet of Power on last time I went through, and it has, as you might know, a permanent Protection from Negative Energy effect. I still got to run away from flayers as they were able to drain me.

Also, if you bring plenty of swords (mordenkainen's) they'll help nicely in battling MindFlayers with Umberhulks. They can't be stunned or intelligence drained, nor can the unber hulks hit them.

Rathan - The Mind Blast is a psionic attack and Chaotic Commands protects you from it, so you are not stunned.

As I said in my last post I tried Mind Flayers without Chaotic Commands and was stunned by Mind Blasts.

After using Chaotic Commands, there were still plenty of Mind Blasts being thrown at me, yet I was never stunned.

Sorry Blackthorne TA you're right... And sorry to you too Faragorn you're also right, I've checked that. Maybe it's just because that Jaheira (who whore the amulet of power) had a MR of 25%, and thereby countered the effect. It's the old rule, if it is an effect or spell that can harm you in any way then MR will affect the outcome.

And for players still experiencing problems with the MF, just take a look at the Pit Fiend section of my last post on this topic.

BTW Blackthorne TA do you know whether or not Team BG is going to make a Rashemen (home of Minsc and Boo) mod?
