My protagonist has a permanent spell effect that shows up any time I go to a new area, unlock a chest, or do 1 of about half a dozen other very common actions. It only lasts for a second, but I'm seeing it far too often, and it really shouldn't be there at all.

I remember this effect occuring after I used the boots of Jansen kind (it was morbid curiosity only that caused me to do this). My half elven ranger/cleric looked like a gnome, then I had my party rest. The effect has been there ever since.

In fact, I'm pretty sure I had the exact same thing happen a year or so ago with another game, but I was smart enough to catch, reload an earlier save, and dump the boots.

At any rate, does anyone know how I can remove this effect (without reloading from an earlier save, that is)?

Yeh, this is a known bug I'm afraid. Try enabling cheats and using CTRL+R on your character.

Thanks Sim. I just found this link on the official site: http://forums.pocketplane.net/index.php/topic,510.msg229117.html#msg229117

I'll try it out to see where it gets me.

EDIT: Okay, so using shadow keeper I removed this effect from my character: 0x00D7, as per the thread I linked above.

I had actually checked "affects" (seems like "effects" would be a more appropriate title) before posting here, and thought that one looked suspiciously like it could be the one. But I was concerned that I might break a game timer or something for some other triggered event. Anyhow, this seems to be the official recommendation, so I did it, and will now proceed, without the annoying mist following me!
