Never played a bounty hunter, but judging by what was said in this topic, I'd say a bounty hunter would survive much longer in a solo then an assassin, Felinoid pointed out that you still keep the normal thief traps, meaning you do get those really powerful traps the other thiefs gain, and the fact that you can throw the traps instead of going around setting them can work to great effects against groups of enemies, or just a big lizard... I also wouldn't underestimate the maze effect, trust me on that, maze your foes with your special traps and while they're gone, set other traps around, then just watch those enemies of yours die in a horrible pain.

Bounty hunter has a lot cheesy strategies with its traps:which can make the game easy and maybe, boring.

Assasin, on the other hand, does his job close-up and personal with his septuble backstabs AND poison. Or, using a ranged weapon with deadly poison works as well. Poison is very sweet, it still does damage when the enemy makes it save vs death, (in all likelihood) which is handy to disrupt enemy spell casters and kill in time.

Using the poison weapon ability with Melf's Minute Meteors or Energy Blades:now all who tried this said it was fun...and evil.

I soloed a thief in BG1 and continued playing him as a swashbuckler in BG2. I stopped at Saradush, he was very powerful. 7x backstab is good but if you can't hit anything it is useless. Swashbuckler has nearly a fighter's thaco in the end. Also his bonus to damage makes up for backstab i think (it applies to ranged weapons too).

I think i've gone a little off topic. Actually everyone is off topic. Topic was "soloing: mage kits" people.

So i will recommend a wild mage. Remember to have at least 16 wis. You can use a cheesy tactic to cast infinite spells with NRD and Limited Wish. Even if you don't like cheese it is still a powerful class with the ability to cast anything in your spellbook with a 1st lvl spell. I've soloed one until underdark and it was the funniest game i've ever played.
