If you take a prestige class in pnp, do you have the xp penalty?

Now, in pnp, I'm playing a dwarf (fighter 2/barbarian 1) I'm planning to go for the dwarven defender.

First of all, the Dwarven Defender needs any Lawfull alignment, so you can't take such a class due to the Barbarian class you also have. ;)

Now, to get to the point... I'm wondering the same thing.
I've looked this up in the PHB and the DMG both but I didn't find anything.

At least in 3E (I don't have the 3.5E books yet), prestige classes DO NOT count when determining XP penalties.

I don't recall. If someone else doesn't respond I'm sure I can find it after I get home to my books.

I would assume it's in the DMG section that talks about prestige classes in general.

I believe that in 3.5E, you do incur an XP penalty.

Wait a minute. It doesn't make any sense to have PrCs with xp penalties, especially since so many of them can only go to relatively low levels, especially all of those five level Harper prestige classes. Now granted, I don't have any of the 3.5 books, but that don't make a lick 'o sense.

Actually, XP penalties for Prestige Classes would help balance out overpowered PrCs.

Overpowered PrCs tend to have requirements that put you in XP penalty division anyway. Like Knight of Chalice. You must have daemons as your racial enemy and you'd best be a paladin. Human, half-elf or aasimar is exempted if there aren't any other classes, though.

In 3E prestige classses do not have the XP plenalty, DMG, page 27. This shouldn't have changed since you can't get a prestige class until you're at least a level 5 in another class.

Ah yes, there it is right on page 27 under the prestige class section (like I thought), second paragraph:
