Ok, I've seen great names every where, like Oerth [that was the Grey Hawk campain setting, right?" or Aragon and Gandalf and stuff. So how do you think they come up with these things?

I have no idea, but for the Drow, it must involve apostrophes. :D

I usually take parts of words and mash them together or anagrams of other names until I get something that sounds good.

I played a Hobgoblin once named Traum, which came from trauma. I once played a Bard name Odoub which came from nO DOUBt.

    But that is just me.

I find it works best to take strange, nonsense syllables and mix-and-match til something sounds good. Then, once it *sounds* good, change the phoenetic spelling a little. For example, let's take the syllables:

    blee, foz, dorn, and gas

    Then stick them together:

    Bleefoz Gasdorn

Now, a little spelling magic and you have

    Blyfoz Gazdorn!

    Hrm....

Well, it takes a few tries to find something that sounds good.

    Blyfoz Gazdorn... Sounds gnomish.

Alot of these types of names are bits and pieces of dead languages, such as Latin and various Celtic dialects....

I've simply written a random generator to satisfy such needs ;)

I use this site to look up words that describe the character I want a name for, and form a name out of them. Because there's multiple languages there, I can take a language appropriate to the race I'm playing.

Well, I just usually think of words that sound cool, and relevant for the character (ie. Azrael for a Tiefling, Brightblade (I know, stolen from Dragonlance) for a paladin, and so forth) and then use them...

Right now I'm using my tag (like in graffitti) for my half-elf rogue, name's Shiv, I quite like it...

Dungeon Master: I've lost the compiled one and the source code, but so soon as I get some free compiler, I'll send you the exe. Edit: I have the compiler and I'll send you the file once I've recovered the code.

Compulsive Dementia you can also download a random name generator. I have one of these and it's great. I can send it to you if you want.

Another idea is to change a name and form another one. For example: Eldar(how the Elves are called in Silmarillion)-Eldarion, Durlag(in BG1-TotSC)-Darlag, Eledil-Eledan and so on. ;)

Finished. It's a simple random generator writing given number of names to a user-specified file. It's *not* customisable. Whoever wants it, feel free to PM me your e-mail address. It must support attachments.
