[IMG] I got to chpt 4 got imoan back and got.....
BORED! I did not like the party I had and my main characters fighting abilities were very poor, I dualled him to a mage at level 9 Kensai.

So I created a party and am playing through the game w/ this party.
Lawful Good Human Inquisitor (two handed swords)
Neutral Good 1/2 Elf Fighter (long sword + shield)
Chaotic Good Elf Stalker (duelling Katanas + axes)
Lawful Neutral Human Conjurer (1/4 staves + slings)
True Neutral Human Priest of Helm (flail/Warhammer + shield)
Chaotic Neutral Halfling Thief (short swords + short bows)

This lets me see what quests are in the game before playing through w/ an NPC party! hAs anyone else done this! Has anyone got the perfect NPC party or the best starting character! oh and by the way I never play evil! The closest I ever got was thinknig about taking Virconia for a romance!

The biggest problem with your ploy is that some of the quests involve NPCs. I think that most of them can be done without taking NPCs into your party, though. The other problem, which is simply a matter of personal preference, is that you miss out on all of the interaction of the NPCs with the PC. I'd recommend playing through the first time with one PC and the NPCs, and then making up your own party the second time through.

Bah, how can you not like the Kensai D Mage. With the right equipment and forsight, he can stand toe to toe along side my berzerker. He is a pure fighting machine and excellent mage. Well, anyway, enough defending my character.

This is the best party I've found for high level games such as this one.

-Fighter D Mage(any sort will do, I prefer the Kensai Mage here)

-Fighter(again, any will do, but I created a berzerker for the part)

    -Ranger(here, Minsc is sufficient)

-Fighter D Druid/Cleric(Best choice, but I created a multi fighter/druid because it fit in with the character I created)

-Cleric/Mage(never tried to dual this character, always multi, but it might be better, used Ariee in this game)

-Thief D Mage(Imoen is the best choice for both classes even with the possible lack of experience and low dualing level)

This gives me 4 fighters, 3 mages, 2 cleric types, and 1 thief without taking up party slots with a pure cleric, thief, or mage :) A very well balanced party with lots of power and few of the drawbacks asociated with some of the classes.

I totally agree with Cucko, for the first game, it would be better for you to get NPCs in your party, some interactions are really fun.

Then, for the next party, you can create all of your characters. In my 2nd game, I got :
    - Fighter / Mage / Thief (I wanted to try that one, but I don't recommend this choice).
    - Dwarven Berseker.
    - Kensai D Thief (really good).
    - Wizard Slayer D Cleric (very good too at high level but quite weak at low level).
    - Sorcerer.
    - Undead Slayer.

This party was nice to play, a little bit hard when I dualled the Kensai and the Wizard Slayer. But, after that hard step, the party was really fun to play. You can try a lot of tactics to face a problem.

After that, I soloed with that Sorcerer, then I soloed with a new Monk.

My made up party was awesome.

    Half-Orc Barbarian
    Dwarven Berserker
    Elven Archer
    Elven Mage/Thief
    Elven Sorceror

This left me a slot for an NPC. I was low on healing but half the NPC's you use are clerical. I cycled several NPCs through the group and wound up taking Viconia til the end.

This party really made things too easy. I think its more of a challenge to use NPC's or solo.

My only party (so far) with more than one character created by me:

    Half-elven Conjurer (daggers, staves)
Human Paladin (guess what, crossbows, longbows)
    Elven Kensai (two katanas)
    Dwarven Barbarian (axes, spears, longbows)

I also had Aerie and Jan... three spellcasters is *really* good sometimes...

I just finished IWD with 6 very skilled characters. It definately made the game easier. When I played BG2/TOB, I used my (high roll) pc and NPCs. I think the NPCs not having super stats balances the game more.

[IMG] Hmmm ... I always played with the game's NPCs before, but you people have intrigued me. I think I'll try something like this...

Halfling Barbarian - Slings, Axes, Flails, shields and the like.
Human Cavalier - 2/h swords, long bows and halberds
H/E Fighter Druid - Scimitars (possibly dual wielding w/belm for frantic tree-defending goblin slicing)
Dwarven Bounty Hunter (heh) - crossbows and lots of trap laying goodness.
Gnomish Cleric/Illusionist - Quayle was the proverbial boy in BG; I love these fellas.
HUman Conjurers - Well, I need a wizard and dont like the compromise in flexiblity that you get with sorcerors.

a good well balanced npc party involving tactical planning rather than the simple rush straight in strategy (which is still a damned good strategy, but rather boring) is infinitely more interesting to play than a maxed out uber powerful user created party

Ah Will, just a small point but Cavaliers can't use Long Bows. Try throwing axes or use a different Paladin Kit.

I also think about an allstar team made from the best of my old PCs since I know any romance by now.

    that could be:
    -halfling cavalier
    -elven archer
    -elven mc fighter-mage
-and maybe a pure priest of helm (or a dc ranger-cleric) for a chance.
I think I'd like to have Mazzy and later (in ToB) Sarvok in my party.

Well, maybe after I finished my actual IWD game ...

However such parties can be overpowered for you can define the stats per character, it can be very cool. I also found this out. You will off course miss some quests but that doesn't involve quests that give unmissable equipment for example. So I should say,m go for it and enjoy! The only hard thing is to tell Imoen you don't need her :)

If they are overpowered you can upgrade the game level (unless you are of course already playing at insane)

I'm currently busy with my own party:

    Human Cavalier TwoHandedSwords
    Human Sorcerer
    HalfOrc Berserker Dualwield BattleHammers
    Gnome Cleric/Thief
    Human Fighter Dualwield LongSwords
    Human Monk.
    (All are Good)

I had to put the difficulty level up a LOT to make the game a challenge again :)

But I agree with one of the above posters, walking through the game the first time, it's much more fun to see the npc's reactions and dialogs... They really are W00T! :)

Hmm.. I always prefer the gnomish specialist mage for magic. Couple of natural (gnomish) resistances, 19 int, only thing is no necromancy, but I think I can live without finger of death n stuff.
I can't remember ever finishing the game with an entire created party, but this would prolly be it:

    1. Undead hunter, there are a lot of creatures that drain levels and they are pretty annoying
    2. Elven archer. I need someone to shoot, gesenbow rocks.
    3. Fighter level 9, dual to cleric. The most powerful combination I can remember playing with.
    4. Fighter/thief. halfling or elf. The thief class gets more thieving points than he can spend. multi class to make up for it, nice front line fighter/backstabber too.
    5. Of course I still need my gnomish conjurer
    6. Avenger, I always like some extra healers. Avenger gets some nice mage spells. Their disadvantages are hardly noticable.

A well balanced party capable of handeling any situation with more than one approach.

    Right. I'd take:

    Elven Sorcerer

Human Inquisitor (2-handed-swords, 2-handed weapon style, longbow, get bastard sword)

Human Kensai d Thief (+++ in Katanas, +++ in Longswords, get +++ in 2-weapon-style)

Half-Elven Ranger/Cleric (Maces, Flails, Hammers, get Sling)

    Elven Fighter/Mage (Halberd, Crossbow/Shortbow)

Elven Archer (Crossbow, and a melee weapon of your choice).

Three fighters, two mages, a thief, and a sniper who can fight just as well as a ranger (despite the fact that he can only get + in melee weapons), and can shoot like a machinegun....

to kick imoen out of your party, yet keep her happy, just drop one of your guys before talking to imoen, pick her up, then reform party and drop her (in which case tell her to go to the copper coronet), pick up your guy, and resume

she wont be pissed off at you =)
