Counting the years in the Forgotten Realms world

Yeah, how do you do that? I love that world, but I don't understand the years, how you keep track of them. 1342d3 or something like that, what the h*ll does it mean?

I'm not an especially big fan of FR myself, but as I understand from the trusty Baldur's Gate 2 manual, the current FR year (or so) is 13 or 14-ish DR. DR stands for Dalereckoning, which I believe works sort of like A.D.; 1 DR should mark some great event of Faerun, which, if memory serves, is when the Elves allowed the Humans to settle on their lands. I also believe the year in FR is 365 days. The months of our calendar work like the FR calendar, but the FR calendar has different names for the months.

And the Forgotten Realms is screwed up. Why dozens of different nations of ethnicity and culture would use the same calendar to determine their year is confusing to me.

According to the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book, the current year is 1372DR. C'Jakob is correct in stating that DR stands for Dale Reckoning, which is when the Elves and Humans of the Dalelands reached a peace agreement.

There are 365 days in the FR calender. There are 12 months of 30 days each. Each month has three 10-day weeks called, get this, tendays. There are no names for the days of the week. That equals 360 days. The other five are monthless holidays spread throughout the year.

Now as to why the calender is the same throughout the continent, I believe that it is just a bit easier to learn one calender then multiple ones. But D&D is a highly modifible game, so feel free to add or make up your own.

The reason the FR world has one calendar is for our(the players) ease of use, its totally possible different groups have different calendars, but they are usually based on moon or sun, and both are in some synchronicity. As well, for BG2, the year is 1369, it's changed, asmr. grouch mentioned 1372."Most use the roll of years," most are from Augathra the Mad(like nostradamus) and a few from Alaundo(BG2 manual. Anyways. Do they have any campagins set-up around the time of troubles? Seeing as how, unlike most people here, I like FR.

 

Hey, I love FR too. I bought the book simply to get ideas for my own game and became an instant convert when I read the thing. It made me wish I had played FR during its 1E and 2E incarnations (of course my DM would have to have used it as well).

The Time of Troubles came when 2E was introduced. This was to help explain the changes from 1E to 2E. Major upheaval. I can't remember where I read it (maybe the WotC site), but all FR supplements, adventures and fiction books are going to come out in chronological order. I don't think there is any hope of anything official coming out set in the ToT.

I wouldn't say that most people don't like FR. I love it but from what I see on the boards, it just seems that most people PREFER(I spelt that wrong diddn't I?) other worlds.

 

well for the last poster ...it is true that most people prefer other realms of reading ..i myself LOVE the forgotten realms...if you have read the "Avatar series " you must make sure to read the "shadow of the avatar "also....Phenominal reading....i am reading the "return of the archwizards" series right now which gives more insight into the creation and development of the new worlds as opposed to the old world of Netheril.......truly a great world to read in as long as you get past the "hero always wins "drama.

 

I've read Return of the Archwizards and am now taking a break from FR and D&D in general to devote more of my time to Warhammer Fantasy Battles.
