[IMG] I had some questions about the running of bulletin boards like these in general, if you had a moment to answer at some point:

    1. How is it paid for? It is, I am sure, expensive to maintain the site.

    2. There seem to be many boards like this on the net for just about every topic you can think of, is there a "program" that is used to create them or are they like tailor made for clients by people who know what they are doing (not me).

I ask because I thought it would be cool to start one for my future law school so students can coordinate things and post questions/discuss materials when unavailable in person. Is this an unrealistic idea? I know of one such board, but it is not for students.

    Thanks for any feedback

How it's paid for is by Taluntain's obvious deep pockets; he's a regular Slovenian millionaire if I'm not mistaken ;) But seriously, this is all paid for by him; I just work here... :) Look at the bottom of the page to see where he gets a bit of the money.

As to the program, look at the bottom of the page once again: Powered by Infopop Ultimate Bulletin Board Version 5.45c.

As to hosting a board, you might want to look at www.ezboard.com they apperently will host a forum for you for free if you can put up with adverts. You'll have to moderate it yourself though.

Indeed, EZboard is great for running your own forum.

The dragons are don't get paid for this but you can sponsor Sorcerer's Place by ordering books or games here on SP. And I suppose they get something for the banners?

[IMG] Well, people have summed it up more or less accurately. Aside from the one about getting money for banners; there is no money in banners alone. If you order something by clicking through them, yes. Otherwise, not a cent.

The most expensive thing about maintaining SP is the time of all the people who make it tick: me, Blackthrone, Darien, etc.
And trust me, none of us get back nearly as much as we put into it. It is nice that our work is at least appreciated, if not compensated for, though.

And as Blackthrone pointed out, you can always help... ;)

In some sites there are donation systems. That's one way of the site earing money. I also heard that you actually recieve some money whenever someone clicks on a banner (not necesssarily buying anything), but I'm not sure about that.

Calis, you're my idol. I'm moving to your place as soon as Arcanum gets released...

If you need one more spammer, of course. ;)

    [Edit]
I just registered. Thought you should be warned...

Calis, he already knows for my intensions for over a month. I'm interested in Arcanum and Torn - no NWN nor PoR can make me stay. Also, I'll check here PT forum from time to time because I'm a kind attached to that game...

Whatever, I'm here a bit more time, as I said - when it finally gets released...
