[IMG] I tell my panther to fight nearest and he says "I'll be back!" and wanders off? Then he says "I'm out of here!".

Meanwhile I have to fight other peoples familiars! my Kobold opponent summons *his* panther and the thing starts sneak attacking me.

I find this strange. I've played a ranger before and found the animal companion extremely effective. As a Cleric my summoned always followed orders.

What is going on? I'm playing SoTU single player. I'm a rogue(3)/wizard(2)

    Thanks for any help!

That's really odd... I've never heard of anything like that happening. Do you have the latest patch installed?

Yes it is up to date. One thing I forgot to mention is that I'm using the Henchman mod - I wonder if there is a conflict...

The Henchman AI mod is what allows the computer opponents to summon their familiars. Again your familiar is running away because of the mod. You need to talk to your familiar and change his battle tactics so he doesn't run at the first sign of danger.

I think you are right. Here are the files responsible for the behavior (from READMEv1.07.txt of the Henchman Inventory and AI mod)

henchfam0 Familiar will use PAUSANIAS_FAMILIAR_THRESHOLD to
    determine when to run away.
henchfam1 Familiar will run away when the challenge is mild.
henchfam2 Familiar will run away when the challenge is medium
henchfam3 Familiar will run away when the challenge is hard.
henchfam4 Familiar will fight to the death.

    EDIT:
Sure enough it was user error. Changing tactics did the trick. ;)
