[IMG] I don't know - I've never played a ranger above thrid level - if I'm misreading the player handbook - but in the back they have a table that says a ranger gets his first spell at level 6.

    Is this right?

Because if it is I seem to have a bug in my game. I've got SoU and I'll try patching it up to 1.31 tonite but I've been trying to experiment with the arcane archer class by building a 7th level ranger . . and he doesn't get any spells at 6th or 7th level. (I've been using the intro of the dreamcatcher mod where it allows you to create an 8th level character before you start the game).

Any ideas where the mistake is - is it me or the game?

Ranger spells are divine, not arcane, so regardless of when they get their first spell it won't help out for your arcane archer. You will need to take at least one level of either wizard, sorcerer, or bard.

Yea, and you need to have at least 13 wisdom to be able to cast all of them.

They're not that good though. They are just sort of, an added little bonus.
Truth be told, ranger's a pathetic in NWN. And this is coming from a ranger fan.

At the end I've been wise to play it to the end with a pure fighter... no spells, no problems, just hack and slash (buuuuaaaaahhh, I want my party!!!)

(no, neither hack nor slash: I made one fighter with a spear to make things prettier.. don't ever do that, skeletons are tough and there are plenty of enemies with puncture resistance (buaaaaaah again) )

I've been playing through SoU and have just reached the start of Chapter 2. I've been playing a ranger rogue and have to say I really like the ranger in SoU. The charm animals skill really comes into it's own -

    spoiler

I charmed the manticore and went onto take out the whole stinger dungeon with it. And the talking to animal ability is well plotted too. A bunch of small plot quests. PLus the tracking skill.
PLus dual classing with the rogue makes a really intersting multiclass - something I used to love in 2 ed D+D but haven't liked in NWN.
