Well I made the upgrade. And it was worth the wait. The graphics are sooooo coooool. I could live inside this world! Which is a bit worrying, maybe.

Anyway, now I've finally got a machine at home to game on I'm going to start tackling the full game.

Have been experimenting with henchmen etc (and yes, I've read the posts). Bashing...I know how to do it.. but what is it calculated on? I can't find a reference in the handbook. A strength calculation? Grimgnaw can bash open certain chests but my chracter can't. (str 15, druid).

I'm thinking of playing through with Sharwyn - do the romance bit, and also because I like meleeing it with magic. but Sharwyn's lock opening abilities are low.

I was thinking that maybe I could bash open chests, I'm planning on taking the str up to 16. But, I haven't a clue on how the bash factor is calculated and I've already met a couple that my weapon is ineffective on.

    Enlightne me, someone, please

The bash check is made with 1d20 roll + your strength modifier. If you can beat a DC for bash you'll break the lock. The most common DC i think is something between 20 and 25, but there are often higher DC's so you have a rather good strebgth modifier to be able to bash something.

I don't know if this is true, but when I played, it seemed that the objects had a certain amount of damage resistance (DR) and a certain amount of hit points. So, if you could cause enough damage on each attack to overcome the DR, you could eventually destroy the object.

You're right each object has a certain DR and Hardness which represents a HP for objects. But you must also have a proper strength to be able to bash either door or a create.

They do have some resistance to damage. Once you strike with more damage than it absorbs you damage it. Power attack makes wonders here.

The best way to bash things even with low strenght is to have a weapon with elemental damage.
Being a druid as you are :D Desert Scimitar +1 is the best weapon you can get. Only drawback is that you have to be 8 level. Until then just take Tomi or any other henchman who can bash&lock it open. As i play a druid as well i know he can manage perfectly well without any henchmen for that kind of thing.
    Just Power attack + fire damage(scimitar ;) ) = open chest.
If you encounter more chests that have lethal traps on them dont trigger them! Just cast Call Lightning and it'll blow all containers open.

Experience from a lone Druid :D

[IMG] Hey! I've never used magic to open chests. Great tip. Now all I have to do is make a spell-casting character and start all over...um...again. :(

The best spell for bashing is Melf's Acid Arrow i think :)

    Cool,

My druid has one level of fighter and great axe specialisation. I've just got firestone great axe, so I'll give it a go with that, and if that fails use the spells.

Which is great, I've got into travelling with Linu, the meleeing and magic works well and I prefer the variety to Tomi or Grimgnaw.

Another question which is off the topic. Hitpoints. I could have sworn I read somewhere that there was no dice roll to calculate hitpoints. I thought I'd read that you got a full roll, ie 10, 8, 6 or 4 depending on charcter plus const bonus etc.
Did I read it? Or was I hallucinating from too many heal potions?
Only I've been getting some pretty strange hit points increases. One level it was 12??? which really puzzled me, being a druid with +1 const bonus and toughness, and the next level it was 7??
    A bug or something?
I mean I'm not complaining about the 12, but I was a bit disappointed to then get only 7 next level.

The Hp are determined by a roll + Constitution Modifier. Druid rolls 1d8 for HP.

Actually, I think the hitpoints for your first three levels are simply your maximum possible plus constitution bonus. Afterwards, it is based on "dice" rolls, but there are still minimums that it won't go under. A reasonable barrier against low level frustration, I suppose.

[IMG] You can always cancel the level up and retry until you get the max hit points or IIRC change the difficulty to Easy before clicking on Level Up.
