My party is just entering the elven ruins, and I know there are a few random chances at landing some elven chain mail. If I can't get them, I'd like to know what my best choice for my Fighter 13 (DC) Illusionist is.

Also, if I do find some Elven Chain, and I switch classes, can my F/Ill wear the armor if the Fighter level is not activated yet?

    TIA

To the best of my memory elven chain should not be a problem, I think it can be worn and still cast spells.

Oh, I know that. I just wanted to know (I realize this wasn't made so clear by me) if it could be worn when my characters Fighter class is still inactive.

For instance, when he's a Fighter 13/Mage 6, can he wear items wearable by a Fighter (a single-classed Mage can't wear Elven Chain)?

I thought they could, but I have been wrong before and I am not home to check it out. I know in BG2 there are some elven chain mial armors mages can wear.

Just looked it up and mages connot wear it. As for weather or not a DC F/I can, well you can always try it on to find out. Thats what I get for playing all four games at once.(IWD, IWD2, BG,BG2)

Once the fighter levels are reactivated, wearing the armor will be no problem. Until then, your best option is probably the robe of enfusing and a good ring of protection.

You'll find an AC3 robe in chapter6 for your fighter/illusionist, the elven chain is better worn by your bard since this is the only armor he can wear while casting spells.
I didn't get one and so my bard's armor slot was still empty at the end. (I had to use bracers AC6 and the shield spell.)

Elven Chain is the best for your mage. What you should do is before entering area is to make a couple of saves and after you enter, then looting the treasure. In the Severred Hand I think there are two or three chances for such a chain. Which is quite... overpowered if you can land them. After the first couple of beating up the games, you will know what items you will need so it will be quite... easy for you to know them and with what items you will equip your characters.

I ended up doing what kmonster said. The Bard is wearing Elven Chain (I found one suit).

There are two Elven Chain in the game, and both are generated randomly, so you're lucky you get one (in one of my games I got neither, in the next one I had both). I agree with kmonster and would give the Robe of Enfusing to the Mage. Although I think that if I replay the game I'll take a Bard and not take a Mage this time (I'll probably go for a party of 5, for a change)
