What's different between 2-handed and 1-handed weapons?

[IMG] I have a mod, G3s tweaks, which allows me to convert katanas into 2handed weapons via the 'bag' icon.
    What then changes?
I know that I can now get the benefit of Two Handed Weapon Style.
But is there any difference in damage, THAC0, Str bonuses and such stuff.

Also, in general, other than the 1D12 damage vs a 1D8 damage, what benefits does an unenchanted 2 handed sword have over a long sword? Exclude Weapon Style bonuses.

I think you just said what they all are...

you do more damage, and you get benefits of a different style. If you insist on omitting that then we very well can't tell you any benefits, you've just told us not to! LOL

Thaco has nothign to do with the weapon in your hand beyond proficiencies and such.

For the two-handed katana and bastard sword components, the only difference is that they're now two handed. This wasn't intended as a powergaming component so that you could eek more benfits out of a katana or bastard sword, more for the folks like me that hate that the game lets you wield katanas one-handed, or worse, dual-wield them.

So there is nothing such as two handed weapons getting 1.5Str bonus, like in IWD II?
The two handed Katana does no extra damage?
Its just that you can use a different weapon style and everything else remains the same?

    Correct.

@ CamDawg - so I take it that you're not working on a mod that allows 2-handed swords to be dual-wielded? :p

    Splunge-- hehe, no.

I have considered making some changes to wielding so that using one or two hands would make a difference beyond weapon style bonuses, but it's Idobek's code--he's been away sick for several months so I don't wish to hack apart his code until he returns.

1.5 str on two handed weapons is a 3rd ed. pnp rule... 2nd ed. which BG is based on had no such rule.

There also might be a speed factor. Two handed weapons are slower and therefore strike later each round. But I hardly notice the difference since you are guaranteed your attacks per round anyways.

They are mostly useful to see if you can interrupt a spell or not, I suppose.
At any rate, with the style bonuses, some 2-handed weapons have a rather low speed factor.
Another point for 2-handed weapons - you can usually attack with them from a larger distance than with a 1-handed weapon, and can thus be used from a safer distance.

In real-life you can use a 'bastard' sword can be used 1 or 2 handed. It a pity they are 1 handed only in BG2.

BG2 seems to favour 1 handed weapons over 2 except for the nice paladin sword, silver sword and the wave halbred.

I also add it would have been great to use spears and shields like the ancient Celts.

To use spears and shields like anyone could be good. In reality, it is very unusual to find a double hand spear, the majority are used in one hand so that the use has some form of protection other than armour. Pikes, however, are another matter, though why anyone would take a pike if they were adventuring is beyond me, given that they are only useful against horsemen, and that only if you have lots of comrades armed with pikes.

Oh, and an answer on "what is better for 2-handed weapons": In this game, 2-handed weapons tend to have better enhancement ratings than 1-handed. There is iirc no 1-handed weapon with more than a +3 rating in SoA. This by itself may not sound like that much, but some mages are quite fond of casting improved mantle as a part of their contingencies. Plus, there is the attack and damage bonus.

In the original game IMoD and Crom Fayer are +5.
Boneblade, Lifestealer, Cutthroat, Flame Tongue and the Hammer you find in Nalia's Golem room all carry +4 enchantment.
Weimer's Weapon Upgrade changes all that ofcourse. +5 single handed weapons litter the place.

Sure there still are no +6 single handed weapons, but thats a ToB discussion.
