As far as I know, a creature has a soul when it has an Intelligence modifier. Those souls depart their bodies when they die. They linger about for a round or 2 and then travel through the Astral Plane to an Outer Plane that's suitable for their alignment or deity.

If I'm not mistaken, some creatures, like spectres, ghasts and vampires, can create spawn. Those spawned creatures have a soul, I take it, since they have an Intelligence score. And I *think* it's the same soul as that the base creature had, but corrupted or something.

What happens if you destroy such a spawn? Does it's soul leave for the Outer Planes?
If there's a LG character killed by a vampires draining ability and spawned as an evil creature (Vampire Spawn is always evil)... Would it go to hell rather than celestia if it is destroyed?

IIRC, in the books about the Avatar Trilogy, at least concerning the Forgotten Realms, it was up to the God of the Dead. Myrkul and his underling Jergal were apparently making the wrong or "bad" decision of keeping the souls and I beleive Kelemvor changed that when he took over that portfolio after Myrkul's death on Mount Waterdeep.

Thanks! Didn't think of that. Makes perfect sense. :) It might differ in any campaign of course, but I like this as a general "rule".
