Just wondering about opinions on Star Wars RPGs, are they any good? Which one is best? The one on Biowares web site, does that play at all like NWN style?

The KotOR series is definitely worth looking into, but i wouldn't want to call the gameplay anything like NWN.

KotOR owns. It's one of my top 5 games of all time. And I don't really like Star Wars.

KotOR is pretty damn good - sure, it has plenty of flaws, but it's still very enjoyable.

It has some big flaws but the story of the game, like many Bioware titles, keeps you enthralled.

KotOR is great and I suggest playing KotOR 1, then 2. At Wizards' site, you should be able to find some pen and paper material for Star Wars d20, as well.

It may be similar to NWN in some ways but it isn't just a Star Wars adventure put in Aurora. Areas are rendered en block, meaning they aren't made in a toolset accessible to mod makers (doesn't mean there are no mods, though). The interface is different. Party interaction and other such... It's probably more similar code-wise than effect-wise. But it does have the good sides of NWN. Actually, the cinematic feel and the simple and yet not unfinished dialogue interface (not plain font on translucent boxes like in NWN but a close-up like in Fallout) is perhaps superior to what you have in NWN. You should be able to recognise some music tones and rhythms, as well. And I'm telling you, pwning with the Force is more fun than magic.

It sounds good, but what does KotOR mean? Is it a RPG? I think I would like to try it, to braoden my experience.

The KoTOR are probably my favourite RPGs (still haven't played PS:T yet, despite it sitting on my shelf for months.). I played them on the X-Box, but I doubt that affects the gameplay that much really.

I'm quite convinced it doesn't because the differences are so small that people have to mention them specifically when they pop up and they do it far from often. IIRC it's actually some items being in one version but not the other, so nothing pertaining to the difference between the nature of PC or Xbox, actually.

There's a space station in the PC version of the first game that isn't on the console version, I'm not sure what differences there are in the sequel, though. Regarding the P&P rules, Wizards of the Coast are no longer supporting the Star Wars RPG, and, I believe, are either stopping publishing the books, or have already done so.

KotOR is my favourite game - ever. So it's probably no surprise that I'd heartily recommend it, on whatever platform. But I'd recommend PC (just) because you'd be able to download patches and add-ons etc. where none have been released for Xbox. Also, apparently some banters were cut for the Xbox release due to space limitations. The game really has very few real flaws, imo, but can be frustrating on the first run-through due to the amount of time taken to get Jedi powers and a lightsabre. I've completed it 3 times now, and I'm still not bored.

The only continual gripe I have is the lack of "subtlety" in some of the Dark Side responses, but that's common in all RPGs, really. After all, 2 of my 3 run-throughs were Dark Side (including my favourite: a Scout(8)/Consular(12) who kicked ridiculous amounts of arse all over the shop  ) and the DS ending makes up for it. It truly is delightful. Just don't neglect Affect/Dominate Mind. ;)

KotOR 2 I'm playing through now, with a male Light Side Sentinel/Weaponmaster. It's good, that's for sure, but I won't be able to make full judgement on how good until the end, natch. But I wouldn't recommend playing it until you've completed KotOR on one of the paths.

Regards comparison with NWN... KotOR (either of them) is streets ahead. NWN is much cruder by comparison, even SoU can't quite match KotOR. There's no comparison between the interactions with your party members, where KotOR is only bested by PS:T. KotOR wins through, overall, imo because other areas (combat, items, Force powers) are more entertaining. And the mana-style system is like having a straitjacket removed after D&D's clunky spell memorisation, which was always a right PITA. Obviously easier for DMs to keep track of things on paper, but horribly inelegant and obsolete on computer, where pushing numbers around is second nature for a counting machine. And item balance is the best of any RPG since BG1, with nothing I'd call game-breakingly powerful.

Bottom line: KotOR is just fantastic. Buy it. Play it. Love it. :tie:

I am convinced, I will buy KotOR. It sounds like a ton of fun. I am going tobust out of my fantasy shell and do it. Thank you all for your prompt and helpful replies.

{Edit} I get home and find out that my wife bought it on ebay last night, and it should be here in a couple of days. Yahoo! :spin:

Both versions are the same providing you have XBox Live. Otherwise there is the Yavin Station area in the PC version, which has some of the coolest items in the game.

    KotOR2 they're identical.

Yeah, my Scout/Consular in I pwned a lot. Light Side, though, for me. In II, I had a Consular/Jedi Master who pwned a great lot in melee, as well. I sort of made a point of using the lightsabre rather than the Force. Slaughtering whole rooms in seconds with the Force on a continous basis didn't really look overly Light Side to me. ;)

I don't have any gaming consoles, I only hve PC so I am somewhat limited, but I can't wait to get it and try it. Are there any sites out there that have a lot of mods for the game?

Ah, no mods that I'm aware of. There's a patch at the official site though iirc.

    @Chev

playing light side you wouldn't have the ability to slaughter a whole room with the force :p
