Are random items generated at the outset of your game, or are they selected at random from a table in the game engine at the moment you open their container?

For example, there are 2 sets of Elven Chainmail available as random items in the Severed Hand (and another you get off the shadowed captain of the guard). If I know where I'm supposed to get them, can I save before opening their chests, and reload until I get what I want?

Cheese, I know, but I'm just curious how it works.

    I dont think you can.
    Atleast I couldn´t last time I played.
I forgot to save and one char died once in the Severed Hand, so I loaded the autosave. And the boxes and tables etc I had checked before that fight contained the same things.

But nothing stops you to try, you cheezy bstrd :p

I've posted a lengthy explanation on the machanics here not long ago. Basically, the random table gets generated once you enter the area, so just reloading in front of a chest will not help. You'd need a save game outside of the area where the treasure is.

Now when you say area, do you mean a single area (the 2nd floor of the Severed Hand, for example), or the entire area (the whole of the Severed Hand)? If I get you right, I think you mean the former. Thus, all I need to do is backup a save from the first floor before entering the second, and I can reload myself silly?

If that is so then I must´ve had the worst unluck in the world cuz I got the 2-handed sword of resistance both times in that pit where you get ambushed on the middle left side of 2nd(?) level :(

Every area number as the game sees it. Sometimes it has more than one room at a certain AR code. That's why it's hard to tell without checking the AR maps.
