Personally, I see Batman and some of his villains as the only worthwhile product put out by the DC universe. It's inferior to the Marvel universe.

So who are your favorite Marvel heroes?

Mine, Ghost Rider, easily the most badass looking of them all. Flaming skull, hellfire chain, penance stare, what's there not to like? Hate the movies btw. Casting Nicholas friggen' Cage? C'mon ...

Morbius, from a Spiderman villain to a complicated anti-hero of sorts. Easily one of the most complex characters in the universe. Wish his comic book lasted longer.

Blade, another badass who's his own degree of anti-hero. Can't blame him for it either.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head atm ...

I must say Wolverine despite the massive over exposure the character has suffered the last decade. I liked the 5ft tall, cube formed, hairy, smoking, constantly drinking Wolverine from the comics I read in the 90s.

DC is not all about super heroes/villains. Some of my favorite comic book characters are from Neil Gaiman's The Sandman series, including the Endless. Then there's John Constantine aka Hellblazer.

Definitely Dr. Strange, though only when he's a supporting character. Then Black Bolt (proof that Marvel can create smart characters, and he's got an interesting story too) and Storm.

My favorite one is the Daredevil. He has great stories and a very strong set of side characters.

    Unfortunately his movie sucks.

As a kid I was less interested in individual characters and more interested in the pecking order - i.e. who could kick who's ass? That's partly why The Avengers movie was so satisfying - young Whedon must have dwelled on that too. :D

The Hulk. No one could compare to The Big Guy. I used my paper route money to buy the comic every month.

Yeah, same here, plus many of the rest of the X-Men. I always thought Magneto, the Sentinals, Nightcrawler, Warpath, Colossus, Deadpool, Sabertooth, Juggernaut, Beast, Longshot, the Hellfire Club, etc, were the coolest. Some of them had really solid, interesting, semi-sensical back-stories that appealed to me. (When I was in elementary school and junior high, when I wasn't reading comics, Stephen King, or JRR Tolkein, I was reading Homer, Shakespeare, and classics like Edith Hamilton's Mythology. In my head, it could all fit together).

Had a subscription to the X-Men for about 5 years in the mid-80s, and for several years Marvel comics were all I spent my "allowance" on. Had hundreds of them, old and new, including New Mutants, the first few X-Factor, spin-offs like Excalibur, the various Wolverine series, etc. I would stare at the X-Man artwork for hours and try to copy it; I was reasonably good at copying Silvestri, Romita, & Lee, and my drawing style, no matter what I did in high-school, was always derivative of Romita.

I also had a thing for Alpha-Flight, probably originally because of the Wolverine connection, and then because none of my friends collected them (more into Daredevil, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man--plus, of course, all the X-titles). Sasquatch, Box, Northstar and Auroura, Puck, Wild Child, et al, all struck my fancy. I think at one point I had #1 through #33 or something like that.

I never really took care of the comics and none of them are worth anything now.

Wow, I honestly didn't realize what a comic nerd I once was, until now.

Over the decades I would have to say Spiderman. However, right now I'm getting a heck of a kick out of Rocket Raccoon.

He makes an appearance in UMVC3. That's one badass, trash-talking, heavily armed woodland creature.

Tough question. I like the X-Men but hard to single one out in particular. I always thought Gambit was cool, even though his power is a bit odd. I'd probably have to go with Hulk, although there are so many different versions of him and they're not all good.

When I was in Jr. High, EVERYONE loved the X-Men, and Wolverine was considered the best of the best. I didn't like him that much (thought he was overrated), and was instead drawn to the Avengers, both East and West Coast iterations. I liked their dynamic and the lack of teen angst that went with the "woe is me, I'm a Mutant" X-Men stories.

In terms of powers, I LOVED Monica Rambeau, AKA Captain Marvel. She could turn her body into any form of electromagnetic energy, and if she didn't feel like getting up close and personal, she could just fire rays at people. She was the Avengers' deus ex machina for several stories -- she'd just turn into a wave of neutrinos and bypass all defenses. Most villains couldn't even see her coming.

I also loved Dr. Strange. He was studly, and like me had shaky hands. Plus, cool costuming and a great backstory.

A lesser known hero whose backstory really got me was Dane Whitman, the Black Knight. I loved his Ebony Blade and the cool stuff he could do with it. He had consequences beyond the moral angst if he killed someone with that sword, and I liked that.

I liked Hercules, sometimes better than Thor. The Marvel Herc just seemed to enjoy life more than most heroes. I vividly remember an issue where he picked a fight with Namor, the Sub-Mariner, just to cheer the old Atlantean up and take his mind off his worries.

In the hands of a good writer, even lame or cheesy heroes can become likeable. Even Captain America!

I was also BIG into Marvel Super Heroes role playing game. The thing was, according to the game mechanics, some heroes just seemed like they were in WAY over their heads. I mean, take the aforementioned Captain America. Rules wise, he just had no hope against anyone with significant powers. I mean, all Iron Man would have to do was hover above him and throw big stuff at him that the shield wouldn't deflect. The end. I felt the same about Wolverine -- if you could fly, just hover above him and blast the living **** out of him. Sure he'd regenerate, but if you're flying, those claws are pretty useless against you. So that kind of tainted my views a bit.

I've never read a whole lot of marvel comics, but from the ones that i did, i really liked Doctor strange. I like the mystic magician feel to his character. First time i saw him was in some spiderman story, i forget which comic it was from (though i may still have it laying in the attic somewhere :p )
