    Lol good point! :D

Hmm...i'd personally choose Edwin cos he's got some bad ass powers ... still havn't got a clue what his necklace does...

Xan is pretty much a git cos he can't memorize fireball if i'm not wrong but he has got a nice sword that no-one else can use ...

Xan may not be able to memorise fireballs, but he can still use wands of fire...

Who is the best mage? Well, Edwin can cast more spells than the others but can not use divination magic (no identify), Xan has a nice sword and is generally cool but can't use many damage spells, and Dyna I know very little about except she's an invoker and can use neither conjuration nor enchantment spells (not good)...

And then there's Xzar, the lunatic necromancer, whom I like, even though he's probably slightly weaker than the above because of his inability to cast illusion spells.

So, it's up to you to decide who you want, but I still prefer Xan... :)

Namuras, you also forgot to mention Xzars weak constitution! Its pathetic! 4 measley hitpoints to start off with! And by the time he hits the double figure (level 3 if you lucky) the rest of the others are in their 30s (or 40's if you got kaigen) Its sad :(

Ahh yes, I forgot about that. Though Xan's constitution is even weaker (7, I think). Not that it actually matters, as they get the same number of hit points anyway.

Edwin's amulet is used to give him his extra spells. It makes the coding a lot easier than trying to apply the extra spells directly to the character.

Xan is pretty weak in the area-effect spells, but he can memorize Skull Trap which is nearly the same as Fireball.

Edwin is best, who cares about divination spells? Almost any shop can identify your items for just 100 gold pieces (one only charges 80/item). All the other spells he loses are detect invisibility (what clerics are for),infravision (you have to be joking) and clairvoyance (I don't like this spell. You can't use the map to check what areas you've not explored and after you've played the game through once it's useless.)

Dynaheir is fair, too. She doesn't lose anything really important, and she gets *free* cure poisons in her special ability bar. (Twice a day, I think)

It depends on what you are looking for. Edwin get the most spells, and not having divination is the least painful sacrifice. The other wizards are physically weak, having low constitutions, and dynaheir seems to rather suck. Can't conjur or enchant? Bad news. Xan's not bad, but Edwin's my favorite. Xzar's not bad either, and he has a great personality.

As I allwaysed played good I generally had Xan or Dynahier, both work well and If you combind them you can have the best of both worlds. Edwin on the other hand does get to cast mor spells per day than anyone else and the spells he misses are for the most part minor.
P.S. Dynahier's special ability is slow poision and he can use it 2X per day.

It depends on the party really....I usually have Minsc so I take Dynaheir but Xan with his constant talks of suicide is wonderfull!but he lacks one of the most favorite spells magic missle.Edwin(with the robe of the evil archmage) is probably by far the most powerfull because of his bonus spells. In the end I will say that Dynaheir is most powerfull because with her is Minsc and with Minsc comes.....duh!....Boo!sooo its Xan if you like his suicidel attitude,Edwin if you like his arsenal of spells and Dynaheir if you want Boo.

I'd say that the real fight is between Dynaheir and Edwin, who are pretty much similar in power - Dynaheir has better spells and Slow Poison but Edwin casts more.

Xan is a waste - his sword may be impressive but if you are really thinking about using him as a fighter you must be crazy; plus he belongs to one of the worst specialist schools. He is useful only if you want to have two mages and not to play one yourself (Robes of the Archmagi are not that easy to bump into).

By the way , if you want Dynaheir without Minsc you just have to take them both and have Minsc killed, or close Minsc into a house before kicking him out (but this is nearly cheating)

There's a roleplaying issue that goes beyond just good, neutral, evil when selecting characters- is the character you are playing likely to choose his/her companions based on skillset, alignment, or personal liking? None of the characters I've played are likely to enjoy the company of any of the three of them, but Xan's pessimism is likely to affect party morale (again, doesn't affect rolls but you have to consider the role playing factor). And Edwin and Dynaheir both have such strong personalities that no characters are likely to find both of them bearable. Generally, I think my cleric/paladin main characters would find Dynaheir fractionally more palatable, but a thief or fighter type might prefer Edwin's snarkiness to Dynaheir's snootiness.

[IMG] Edwin is the most powerful as a mage. Dynhaer isn't worth it IMHO apart from minsc and boo accompanying her. Xan has a nice moonblade but as people have already said he's a mage and mages don't usually act as front line fighters, not in BG1 at least. Xan is the only one without any conflicts with other party members because minsc and dynhaer will eventually fight with edwin which is of course bad news. I'd pick edwin if you don't want minsc but dynhaer if you have minsc in your party. Xan's advantages of his sword are outweighed by his specialist school disadvantages and his low health.

[IMG] Ive gotta ask, what is up with all the commotion about what spells they have?!

Not able to cast Magic Missile or Fireball, get a scroll for god's sake!!!

And IMO, Xzar is funnier than anyone.
    Although i play with Edwin.

[IMG] I usually take Xan as my main mage and use him for enchantment, conjuring, dispelling, divination, necromancy and the like (plus, dont forget that he can use the arrow spells) and take a backup mage, (I like Quayle and Garrick) whose spell slots I fill up almost entirely with magic missile, fireball etc. I find this helpful as it encourages you to use magic in different ways, rather than just nuking everything in your path (while still leaving that option open if it's needed ;) ). Works for me, anyway...

I personly like Dynahere (check spelling). Mainly because she has good spells and she is the only mage I stuck with and worked on.
