Educational Insanities #3 - Girl and Butterfly

    A small quick story today. One of the key ideas that all our classes have been driving across is the importance of knowing your learner.

    "Sit down and brush your hair"
    "Yes Grandma," she sat down and brushed her hair.
    "Pack your bag"
    "Yes Grandma," she packed her back
    "Get your apple from the bench"
    "Yes, Grandma," she got her apple from the bench.

    "You're going to be a good girl at school today?" the Grandma asks.
    "Yes, Grandma."
    "And you're going to listen to the teacher?"
    "Yes, Grandma."
    "And you're going to do your writing?"
    "Yes, Grandma."

    They walked to the door, where the Grandpa was outside weeding his cabbages. He took her hand and walked her to the end of the drive-way.

    "You're going to be a good girl at school today?" the Grandpa asks.
    "Yes, Grandpa."
    "And you're going to listen to the teacher?"
    "Yes, Grandpa."
    "And you're going to do your writing?"
    "Yes, Grandpa."

    After school, the girl came home. Her Grandpa was in the garden, weeding the cabbages. Her Grandma was on the balcony, reading a book. They came to the driveway to see the girl.

    "Did you have a good day at school?"
    "Yes Grandma"
    "Were you a good girl at school today?"
    "Yes Grandpa"
    "Did you listen to the teacher?"
    "Yes Grandma"
    "Did you do your writing?"
    "Yes Grandpa"
    "Well, what did you write about?"
    "Butterflies."
    "Go and get your book and read it to us."

    The girl went and got her book and opened it.

    "This is me and I kill butterflies," she read.

    The Grandma and Grandpa paused and looked at each other.

    "And what did your teacher say?" Grandma asks.
    "The teacher said that we shouldn't kill butterflies because they were pretty"

    Grandma and Grandpa paused again, looking at each other. Grandpa shrugged his shoulders.

    "She must buy her cabbages from the supermarket."

    They do, most butterflies will lay eggs on nettles if they can but caterpillars are ravenous little sods and will eat pretty much anything.
