[IMG]GameDaily has written a rundown of the top 25 arcade games, which we're posting as a special tribute to our brand spanking new arcade. Here's one of the entries (and my personal favourite):

    19. Mortal Kombat (Midway)

"Fatality!" This jarring word changed the face of gaming forever when Mortal Kombat made its arcade debut in 1992. The game utilized motion-captured actors in several roles, including a mercenary, a Bruce Lee-like warrior named Liu Kang and a pair of masked ninjas with devastating skills. Where it was most memorable (and controversial), though, was with its fatalities – you can literally rip someone's head from their shoulders with the right joystick motions.

You can find the full rundown here.

So, go on. What's your favourite?

I've only just noticed that Mortal Kombat is nearly as old as me...

Maybe I missed something, but I didn't see where this was done as a tribute to the new SP arcade. Oh well, no matter.

I agree with one of the comments in that link. Galaga definitely should have been included.

More like we're posting this news as a tribute to our new arcade, as we don't generally post this kind of news. I've fixed the wording on the news post to make it clearer.

Nice list, comparing arcade games from different decades is quite difficult, so many great games were left out.

Dragon's Lair! Mortal Kombat! Tetris! Space Invaders! And of course the immortal Donkey Kong! :D
I think the only game that I've actually never seen in an arcade is Pong. I think I agree with Pac-Man being #1. It's far from being the most advanced, but it's one I always went back to, even when much newer and fancier stuff was available. All the ones I've listed above had their moment of glory then declined (or vanished, in the case of Space Invaders and Dragon's Lair), but Pac-Man somehow outlived so many of the others.

Consider yourself happy! At least you're not as old as Zork and Ultima :shake:

Haha, I guess so. But still, it's scary to think how long some of these games have been around and even what consoles they've been on.

    Or Etch-A-Sketch :geezer:

Hey! It had a screen. And dials. That counts. (Doesn't it?) :p

They also missed Gauntlet, Battletank, and Pole Position.

...and the ultimate arcade game -- pinball (in it's many forms).

Yes indeed T2, Gauntlet is a great arcade game that wasn't mentioned. I had completely forgot about the Simpsons game, that was a blast. We went to Laser-Quest for a friends, birthday party once and this game was there, the previous high scores didn't last long (I was vacuum wielding Marge (:).

I've never seen Gauntlet in an arcade actually. I wonder how popular it was (I'm assuming quite a bit)

If Pinball counts, then that would definitely be #1. In terms of popularity it's unbeatable. And it's still around after all these decades!

 How could I have missed Pole Position and Pinball?!?

    On these Boards, it's not hard to out-geezer a 16-year-old. :p

    Words of wisdom.

As for Mortal Kombat, I lost a lot of time playing its successors on Sega. Fatality... that brings back some memories. :shake:
