It's because illusionists get at least 16 dex and therefore their average rolls are better.

kmonster's right, it has to do with class/specialization minimum requirements.

No matter what race I choose, I always have an easier time rolling stats with Rangers and Bards. I once rolled a total 97 with my half-elven Bard. I still have the .CHR file saved.

I know this is the way it should be, but for some reason when I install BGII, I can lower any Gnome Illusionist/Thieves DEX to 9. Weird, right?

Yes, creating bards and rangers is very nice especially with half-elves. Many times I've managed to create rangers with 18 in at least 3 attributes (Str, Dex and Con), even 4 (Cha) from time to time. Same with bards, 18 in Int, Dex, Cha and some points to spend on either Str, Wis or Con.

I definitely second the vote for rangers. Due to their high minimums in constitution and wisdom, and a minimum strength score to boot, they get very high rolls. (I think they have a minimum dexterity score as well, although I'm not sure about that.) You can make a ranger-cleric multi-class with an 18/xx strength, 18s in wisdom, constitution, and dexterity, and 10 or better in intelligence and charisma quite easily.

The Ranger's minimums are as follows:

    13 STR
    13 DEX
    14 CON
    14 WIS

Combine that with an Elf who has minimums or 8 in INT and CHA and you have an above average stat character, with the minimums!

Paladins also have high minimum stats - second only to rangers I believe.

That place is reserved for elven druids. Paladin comes on third place.:)

Redrake, I have not been able to create an elven druid...do you have any mods installed?

Oh, right, I forgot. It is only possible in IWD1, not in BG games. OK, then. For BG games, Paladin is on the second place.:D

I don't think you can make an elven Druid in IWD1 either.

You can definitely do it in IWD2, but there are no class stat requirements in that game.

You can. This is a known difference between IWD1 and BG1&2. You can't make Elf Fighter/Druid multiclass, but a single class elven druid is possible.
