We know something of where Tazok and Angelo sprang from, but who is this mysterious mage?

Someone once said that Semaj is James spelt backwards, James being one of the game designers. I don't know if this is true or not but it might well be.

The first part of your statement is apparently true :D , and I suppose the second one as well, since a lot of people worked on the game. But I have not heard about any connection between the name and its source of inspiration either, so I cannot say anything about that.
One thing is sure: they like to create new names by reversing existing ones (see Koveras in Candlekeep)

The lead designer is called "James" Ohlen and he also co-designed the core of the game.

Of course, that might just be coincidence.

It'll probably turn out the graphics designer has a girlfriend called Sarevok. :p
