Actually the ones I'm thinking of were first edition, but the gold box series, Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds and Secret of the Silver Blades...

There may have been more too, but I don't know if there were...

In Pool of Radiance, there isn't any chance to play a Druid, Bard or Paladin, iirc.
Secondly dual classing isn't an option as well.
In this area Baldur's Gate has more features implemented.

Though the more restrictive features of the pen&paper version like gender and race restrictions are in the Gold Box Games.

I only played Baldur's Gate and have my other information off of websites, so correct me if I'm wrong.

Overall, I think that the original Baldur's Gate ore Icewind Dale are pretty accurate in their P&P implementation as well.

You could dual class in the gold box games. That's how I got through that extra area at the end of the last one, where you face waves of enemies with all the bosses, etc. Fighters dualled to three mages, two clerics and one thief at levels 39/40.

    Nice, didn't know of that.
Does it work for the first in the series, PoR, as well, e.g. a human F2->M3 ?.

I wish I had a chance to play these games as well,
as the game mechanic looks pretty nice even by today standards.
But for one, the weird 3d pseudo graphic when wandering in town looks really ugly, and secondly it is damn hard to get these games to work properly, let alone to get a legal copy.

You cannot dualclass in Pool of Radiance (which is the oldest of all) or the Krynn games, but you can dualclass in all the others.
Paladins are allowed in all games but PoR and CoK while rangers are allowed in all games but PoR.
Unlike in BG or IWD the gold box games feature racial level restrictions and attacks of opportunity when you flee from enemy's melee range.

I played those games on my win98 PC, for some I used a slowdown program (moslo), but they all worked. Others play them with dosbox or emulators (Amiga or C64 or other versions), they don't face many problems either.

For old games I recommend abandonia.com, you also get some information about their legal status, links if they are still sold and help getting them to work at this page.

Those old gold box games were sold in huge numbers when they were released and included in several game collections afterwards, so it shouldn't be impossible to get an used versions.
