[IMG] :borg: .... A module I'm working on uses the Arcanius 18-in-1 hak pak. It's a 108 megabyte download, and I was wondering: do you think this will seriously decrease the amount of people who would end up playing it due to the long download time on lower-end connections? Would it be better to not use the hak-pak and end up with more popularity turnout?

That hak-pak is probably a bit to big for the majority of players, yes. I would recomend not using hak-paks which in total are bigger than 15 megabytes.

Even on broadband I would balk at the idea of downloading a 108MB hakpak.

That's really large for one module. Will it decrease the amount of players? Without a doubt, but the people that are interested in it will download overnight or something and still play it.

Just thinking in terms of myself and a 56k modem, there's no way I'd download something like that. I usually download larger hak packs overnight just to make sure I can complete the download. But I wouldn't even be able to download something that large by the next morning, and I'd bet at the end of the day, I simply couldn't complete the download due to disconnects from my isp. I believe the largest I've ever downloaded is around 60 MB, and that took several evenings to get a successful download (that one also took all night and then some to get). 108 would be almost impossible. If I would suggest anything as both a world builder and someone on a pidly 56k connection ( ;) )

I'd say limit the scope of what you're doing to a smaller hak pack. 18and1 probably has alot of nice tilesets, but it also has alot of stuff and a huge size. I'm working on a persistant world project and I don't think they'd even consider anything larger than 10mb (and they'd prefer something closer to 5mb at that). My personaly feelings are that anything over 10 will alienate casual players on 56k, but those who are really interested will probably download something up to say 25mb. Since you can now use multiple hak packs, maybe you can find what you're looking for by combining two haks? I know it doesn't always work well when you combine multiple haks, but sometimes you can get lucky. Also, try finding someone who can work with haks. Maybe they could combine the features you really want out of that 18and1 hak into a smaller and more managable hak.
