    What we asked:

Q: What's the average number of hours that you've spent playing any kind of computer games (including Flash and online games) per week over the last 6 months?
    (649 votes total)

    51+ (167) 26%
    21-30 (94) 14%
    16-20 (90) 14%
    6-10 (78) 12%
    11-15 (71) 11%
    0-5 (68) 10%
    31-40 (56) 9%
    41-50 (25) 4%

I believe the phrase rhymes with "clucking bell"... More than a quarter of our visitors (26%) spend more than 51 hours a week playing computer games, i.e. more than 7,3 hours a day on average. When I think about it, I'm not quite sure which feeling is prevalent here in my case, but it's something of a mix between utter disbelief, incredulity and horrendous envy. I don't think I've had enough free time to play computer games for over 50 hours in the last YEAR, and here a quarter of our visitors spend this much time playing every week? The results of this poll have really floored me. Keep in mind that time spent playing games on consoles was not even included in the poll!

Slightly fewer poll participants (14%) play computer games around 21-30 hours a week (about 3-4 hours a day on average), followed by a nearly identical number of people (again 14%), who play computer games around 16-20 hours a week (about 2-3 hours a day on average).

From here on it goes down by a percent over the next four poll results: 12% of our visitors play computer games 6-10 hours a week (about 1-1,5 hours a day on average), 11% play 11-15 hours a week (about 1,5-2 hours a day on average), 10% play 0-5 hours a week (under 1 hour a day on average), and 9% play 31-40 hours a week (about 4,5-5,7 hours a day on average).

Finally, 4% of those who have voted play computer games 41-50 hours a week (about 6-7 hours a day on average).

Looks like you needed a further breakdown for numbers between 51 and 168 ;)

Not that I would have thought so before the results were in. That's really amazing.

Yea, I wouldn't have believed it. I didn't think there'd be more than a few percent in the 51+ category. It's rare, but now and then we really get poll results that take me completely by surprise.

Even I don't make it to the 51+ category nowadays...

Well, I voted for 21-30 since I figure I play about 3 to 4 hours a day, but it would be considerably more if I weren't doing the message board and chat things.

[IMG] It really is surprising. Seems to me that if you spent that much time staring at a Screen, your eyes would give out! I am lucky to get a couple of hours a week right now... 30 minutes stolen when both kids are napping at the same time, AND all the trivial things like dishes and laundry are done! I know there are a ton of great games out there, and a huge number of platforms, antique and new, but I couldn't imagine having that much free time. You are right... Simply amazing! :)

That's ridiculous. Somebody must just be showing off at how unproductive their life is.

I have a productive life, I work many hours, but I build time in to unwind after work, and usually end up with one night (6-8 hours) of play time. I have a stressful job and need the relief, so I just sacrafice some sleep here and there. I still spend plenty of time with the wife and kids as well, I just find that I melt down without ample me time.

I end up in the 16-20 hour slot.

Ok I am in the 51+ hours category and in general here is how my day breaks down Monday to Friday, 7:30am til 5:30pm travel to and from work, and work itself. 6pm til midnight gaming online and local.

Midnight til 7am sleep which usually because of my bad sleeping habits will include 1-2 hours local gaming. So on average from Monady to Friday is 36 hours.

Saturday I usually get up at 8am, shopping etc usually takes up 2 hours, the rest of the day until usually 3 or 4am I'm playing with breaks for food, stretching etc; so about 14-15 hours gaming.

Sunday I get up at 9am and spend all day on the computer until about 1am, with breaks for laundry, food and exercise etc again about 14 hours.

In total that is an average of 64 hours.

Since my illnesses I have become a recluse really, I don't go out unless there's a reason (birthday, anniversary, birth etc), I don't watch TV at all except for sports and then usually on the net.

With a family, work and other things to attend, I barely reach 14 hours per week. Still I would play a lot more if I had the time...

[IMG] I too have a busy life with working as a full time school teacher, 2 graduate school classes, and newly married (no kids yet). As Brallrock says, going too long without "me time" leads to meltdowns. Everybody has an interest that helps them keep their sanity. For many of us, its gaming.

I strive for 8 hours a week. I think that's reasonable. To be able to fit even a mere 8 hours means that occasionaly sometimes I have to sacrifice 8 hours a night of sleep down to 6 hours a night, but it's so worth it.

Some weeks I get lucky and get 10 hours of gaming. Other weeks I'm not so lucky and only get 6. But as an absolute rule I try to never let a week go by that I don't get at least 5 hours of gaming (unless there's something really major going on or something like vacation.) I know that when I have kids it's going to go down, but I am still hoping for a solid 6 hours a week. Who knows maybe by the time my kids are teens they'll want to play Neverwinter Nights 5 and BG 6 with their dad, Big B :p

Now in the summer, I work part-time (teacher, remember). So in the summer I can get in a little bit more a week. I average 14-16 hours a week during the summer.

I wish I had kept track of how much I got to play when I was an undergrad. Hah, you 50+, heck, even you 20+ hours a week people - you enjoy it while you can.

Wow. No wonder you guys can finish these games so quickly if you spend that much time playing them. The most that I could ever possibly play in a week would be 10 hours, but it would usually be closer to 4. Despite the fact that I simply don't have that much spare time, even if I did try and play more than 10 hours, my eyes and hands would get too tired to play any more. I can't see how it is possible to play computer games for 50 hours a week without ending up with some sort of chronic overuse injury. But it must be possible, because you guys have said that it is. You are all superhuman computer gaming ultra-athletes!

Wow! I was borderline between 6-10 and 11-15, and I thought I didn't have a life (my wife would attest to that). :p

[IMG] Exactly Splunge. But now we have proof. We can show our wives and say, "see honey we aren't even near as bad as you thought. See how much our peers play? We're 'reasonable' actually." :p
Err well, it's worth a try anyways... :hahaerr:

16-20 for me. It occasionally drops to below 10, when I've got a busy week, but it very rarely goes above 20. Gaming's not my only hobby, so I tend to leave time for other things as well. I don't think I'd even want to play 50 hours - that would mean pouring in all my free time (and more) into gaming. I mean, I love gaming, but not THAT much! :)
