The latest Ebola virus outbreak is unprecedented in scope, to say the least, and has also claimed the lives of a lot of doctors and nurses who were trying to help out.

Can it spread outwards to become the next Spanish Flu?

    Here's a contrary view:

    http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/201...he-ebola-outbreak-spread-to-europe-or-the-u-s

Scary stuff, I have a hard time thinking of a more horrible way to die than through the Ebola virus, based on what I've heard of the symptoms.

With so many people on the planet someday, somehow, we are always in a risk of virus or bacteria taking a lot of people down the drain. I doubt that any big outbreak will happen through normal distrubion in any of the european countries or in the states. It has to be spread massively and fast through devious human means to reach a state like the spanish flu. Any big airport hub is likely a target.

There are levels of survival we would and more importantly ,could, be willing to take in order to contain it. Just like the normal flu seasons. We accept it is here once a year in Denmark, but we still go to work, shop, do activities, parties, busses etc knowing it is going to hit a lot of people. If a deadly virus or bacteria should spread, we'll be damn fast to isolate it and stay in cover until it is over. Like SARS that easily spreads because it is airborn. It got all over the world, but still didn't catch on.

From that link, I understand that ebola is not that easily transferable, unlike something like the common flu. That alone will likely keep the spread down.

Well, it's definitely something to be worried about. On wikipedia it also says that it's transferable through blood or bodily fluids, not through the air. That should limit the spread.

On the other hand, if incubation time really is up to 3 weeks, that's a lot of time to spread the disease further. Apparently men can pass on the disease if they survived it for 2 months after they got better.

It is a slow but brutal one. The slowness makes it harder to eradicate. People get it, go home, tell themselves it never can be ebola, spread it, and die.

As soon as it hits the western world, the cure will be on sale shortly after.

Already has hit the Western world apparently, at least in isolated instances. A case in Texas, and a case in Spain.

My old lady is part of the leadership/board for Disease Control in my local community/city. They are definitely worried and have already taken several layered steps to help provide support and information in the rare occurence it comes to our area.

Me and the Missus have a trip planned to Dallas in early November. She is already trying to back out of it because of Ebola. I think she is crazy as they must have washed the entire airport with bleach by now.

Dallas is where the ebola guy died. I'd make sure my tickets were refundable in case things don't go smoothly in Dallas between now and November.

Seasoned adventures do not run from Talona's minions.

    They prepare!

Refundable tickets is a logical step. Anything can happen.

In the news this morning was the revelation flu shots would be in short supply due to high demand in response to the ebola outbreak ... idiots.

I just got back from Dallas. It was a great trip. My wife was shocked that she was the only person worried about Ebola. I told her she had a better chance of being hit by a bus then catching Ebola. For some reason she was convinced there were going to be people laying in the street dying.

    Three weeks until Ft. Lauderdale.

I talked to somebody who sits on the same board as I am. He's a paramedic.

He was of the view that Ebola is much scarier in third world countries in Africa because the disease transmits much easier to people who are malnourished and thus have weaker immune systems.

The risk for the doctors and nurses who've been over there is that they're treating people with extremely high viral counts, which makes it far more contagious.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't both nurses who treated the Texas patient survive?
