This may be a case of over-interpretation and over-analysis, but 12 o'clock in

"Secondly, the deadline for handing in your papers has been extended till Monday 28 January, 12.00 o' clock."

    can mean 24.00/12 PM/midnight, right?

As always, procrastination has got to me and I can use all the extra time I can get. :p

Well, since we Europeans use the 24 hour clock, it probably means noon ;)

And besides, January 28th 0:00 is preceded by January 27th 23:59, so you might even have 12 hours less than you previously thought :p

Well, from a strictly linguistic point of view, it can mean both 12 midnight and 12 noon. But unless your university's staff work through the night collecting papers, it should be safe to assume from the context that they mean 12 noon. :p

Also, as Mesmero points out, if they work by a 24 hour clock, it probably means noon.

    Before 12 AM then. :p

But I sent her an e-mail in the hope that she'll read between the lines and sees my sad smile and grants me the afternoon+evening too. ;)

My first thought was midnight. But then, I'm also a procrastinator ;)

Wrong. :p Technically speaking, midnight and noon are neither am nor pm. Midnight is the point between two days (and therefore belongs to neither day), and noon is the point between am and pm.

12:00 Monday therefore is probably 12 noon on Monday (since 12 midnight could be the point between Sunday and Monday, or Monday and Tuesday), and on a 24 hour clock, it would definitely mean noon Monday.

Of course, you could gamble by arguing that, based on ambiguity, you interpreted it to mean the end of the day on Monday. But I wouldn't advise it. :p

Yeah, she had no mercy, it's noon. This means I will get very little sleep tomorrow night. But I don't really mind that much...adrenaline high! :p

Well...technically, that's only true for only 0.0000000000000000000000000000001 of a second. :p :shake: :rolling:

No no no! That's far too long. Midnight and noon have no durations whatsoever - they last only for an instant. 0.0000000000000000000000000000001 of a second is an eternity by comparison. :p

Hah, I made it. My oral exam was quite alright. One question good, one average, one great. The paper is...I have really no idea. It's not really bad, just a couple of silly mistakes in layout I'm hoping she won't notice. I'm curious as to the the grades they'll give me.

One thing most of my teachers do to avoid this type of confusion is make the time the paper is due at 11:59pm. Perhaps you should offer that tip to your teacher for future reference...or just tell him/her to go by 24 hour time. :rolling:

    'tuun,
I've been lurking these boards, trying to stay unnoticed for months and more months, until finally The Masked One came with the sign and started the long-expected "12 o'clock"-thread.
What is your wish, my Delirious Mistress?
