I remember years ago we were lucky enough to have someone post about Viktor Orban trying to defend him in one of the threads. I suspect at the time most of us didn't know what he was talking about however what I'm guessing happened is somewhere someone noticed he was proposing something questionable and-when called on it-he and his party responded by putting out a load of internal (to Hungary and its population) propaganda.
But now that coronavirus has come along he wants to be able to rule by decree and ban what he calls misinformation. Funny thing is the question can be asked misinformation about what and according to who? A concerning question is if he would ban discussion about himself that is truthful by labelling it misinformation.
Now his party has a supermajority in parliament so it may be able to push this through as a law. But did it give itself a supermajority by something similar to gerrymandering which-if true-is undermining democracy in itself.
    Link on the proposed law.

Hungary's become quite influential in Slovenia over the last few years. Injecting free* money into the poorest region bordering on Hungary (various donations for improving quality of life for the population there) and supporting our newly elected government's propaganda media machine (funding newspapers, television etc. singing praises to the authoritarian leader of the party currently in power, Janez Janša, and blasting everyone else on a daily basis). Basically, the government we have now has a leader with very similar views and inclinations as Orban.

I have no doubts that the money pouring in from Hungary was with the intent to influence and support the election of Janez Janša and his party, SDS. Which is very problematic on many levels. Janez Janša, who is currently our Prime Minister, also views the media not under his (party's) control as the enemy, regularly issuing threats to various news outlets via Twitter and otherwise. This news piece provides a good example of his hatred towards various news reporters.

So while we may not be on quite the same boat as Hungary yet, we're definitely floating in the same general direction.

You want Trump to round out the bunch? You are welcome to him. Take his whole family while you're at it.

Oh, both Janša and Orban take plenty of cues from Trump as well, but they're not alone in that. Many politicians across Europe are. Politicians are quick to copy what they see working well.

Yeah, everywhere the governments (the EU itself, now as well) seem eager to use all your personal data to monitor who has the virus and where they've been. Big brother is watching you, indeed.

For Hungary, they don't need to look as far as Trump for similar examples, they've got Russia much closer by, and Putin has been doing this kind of stuff for years.

I've heard they are in Poland a bit though I don't think they would care for Putin all that much.

BTW Hi and I hope you are healthy.
