Do I have to do the Grud's Fish Story first? The encounter there seems impossible for my L4 party.

Have you taken care that the spokesperson of your party has the approbiate skills raised to trigger the wanted response (e.g. diplomacy) and that the person with the skill iniates the dialogue and not someone else of the party? Only if you did the gruds fish quest first and got the reputation for it you do no longer require to be able diplomats

I was able to trigger the quest with Mona, but I can't find Mickey, he's not on the map where he normally is and I couldn't find him anyplace else. This is in CO8 not regular TOEE. It's been a long (around a decade) time since I first played so I thought I needed to complete Mona's quest to gain Serena as a companion. Also, how do I expand the number of party members? I know it's preset at seven but I thought I saw something that suggests you can expand it to 8? I also know that you are better off with a smaller party because then they individually gain more XP from each encounter, but I like having companions, especially now that the original companion looting bugs are fixed. And you can always farm traveling random encounters for some extra XPs.

Mickey changes places between his workingplace (the brewery) at daytime and the nightlife of Nulb. Passing time on location won’t let him appear, you have to enter the location at the approbiate time to find him (e.g. by resting in your rented home and leaving at the right time).

Ohhhh! Ok, thanks for the heads up. I was trying looking around places in town but couldn't find him, probably the wrong place and the wrong time, so I'll keep exploring. I did figure out that I don't need to complete that quest to get Serena, but I already have seven party members so unless I can get help figuring out how to expand the party-size limit I'm stuck. I figured perhaps CO8 changed this, but I wasn't sure and I wasn't being able to find him, I was probably just not being thorough enough. Thank you. :)

I mean I figured that CO8 changed the fixed locations of some of the plot-related NPCs like they changed the ring-goblin in Hommlet.

The party size for ToEE has a maximum of 8 that can be split between PC’s and NPC’s. Co8 allows to set that split any number between 8/0 and what you want - however there are several occasions where you need at least 1 or 2 free slots for NPC’s to be able to get a quest (e.g. Prince Thrommel) or have certain NPC’s join (two join only if you take both).

They did not only change the ring-goblin - depending on your starting quest (that depends on your starting party alignment) there might be no ring on a goblin and it might not be at the same place. I *accidentally* found what I needed after a fight in a completely differnt place to my surprise

Yeah, I went thru that bit with the change of where Black Jake's ring is found and figured that they may have changed some of the starting locations of other quest-related NPCs - like Mickey - whom I couldn't find. I tried to "hire" Serena but she said that she'd wait for me to have room to join or something. I currently have Elmo in my party and I was considering dropping him for her, but he's such a tanky beast that losing him would be painful. So from appearances I'm still stuck at seven, unless I did something wrong in Serena's convo. But you suggest I keep the 8th slot generally open for "emergency" characters?

When you start the Co8 modpack menu you can set the PC/NPC ratio unlike the original game where that was a fixed ratio.
When you did not already change something the standard would be 5 PC / 3 NPC.
In that case if you already have 3 NPC’s then the NPC part of your party is full.
How many PC and how many NPC characters do you have in your party?

I opted for only 4 PCs figuring it would mean I could get an extra npc

so I would have had to change it in the opening menu?

My memory of Mona's quest was that if you return her crystal ball she offered you Serena as payment for it.

If you created only 4 PC’s in the game then you have 1 less than you could have but are still limited by the maximum of 3 NPC’s.

If you want more than 3 NPC’s at the same time in your party you need to change the games rules in the Co8 menu under "options" "max number of players in the party" to 4/4.

Can I retro that so it will affect my current party?

And how do I do that? I don't seem to get a Co8 specific menu, just the TOEE one.

I am not seeing such a menu, just the basic TOEE one and I don't see anything THERE that lets me change party stuff like that.

How do you start the game? I’m currently using the GOG version + Co8 New Content, so I have two icons on my desktop:
the round one from GOG to start pure TOEE and the square one from Co8 labelled "Circle of eight modpack" that brings up the
    "ToEE Front-End X"
    http://www.co8.org/community/index.php?threads/toee-front-end-x-4-0-discussion-thread.10373/
where you can use the menu to easily change your settings or change between different mods of ToEE (e.g. "Keep on the Borderlands").

Sorry I am late to this thread, but you need to change your party PC/NPC balance on the CO8 front end as set above. I do not believe you can change it once you have started a game, but that question is best answered on the CO8 site unless Gaear happens to wander by this thread and answer it.

Ok, I did figure it out thanks to help people gave me, yes it's in the TFE-X startup program that lets you choose which version of TOEE to play: Classic or Co8-modded. It's in those options, and yes you can change it after starting a party at long as it's not going to break your current party I would assume, so I had a group of 4 PCs and 3 NPCs and was able to set it to 4/4 so I could pick up Serena as my 4th NPC. Note that The short-cut icon you see on your desktop says "Co8 Modpack" but once you start that up it calls itself TFE-X - which is where I was getting confused. Thanks everybody, with your input I was able to figure it out even though I was being confused by the switching of names.

    And *SPOILER AHEAD*

And ultimately I did figure out my initial question as well. Mickey starts off in Hommlet in the brewery and you have to convince him to meet you in Nulb. Most of the walkthru's say he's found in SW Nulb, but he's in the tavern there AFTER you talk to him in the brewery, and only at night.
