Long sword or two-handed sword probably gives you the most options to choose from.

Most weapons are more or less balanced out with eachother, though there's certain types that include a specific weapon that gives a neat effect or bonus that are good to have as end game weapons.
Crom faeyr with it's 25 STR bonus and the Flail of the ages with it's (eventual) 5 types of elemental damage are 2 examples of really great end-game weapons, making warhammers and flails good places to put proficiencies.

As far as bg1 goes, the best iteration for most weapons in the game are +2 variants, with +3 variants appearing in siege of dragonspear.
You can pick up a +2 shortsword and +2 longsword almost immediately at the start of the game - the shortsword from a hobgoblin encounter in the red canyons (same map as basillius) and the longsword from greywolf on the nashkel mine map.
On the other hand, you won't be able to get a +2 two-handed sword until you unlock the cloakwood (and a +3 one on the 4th basement floor of durlag's tower) so for a god portion of the game the best you'll be able to find is a +1 version.

In bg2, most weapon types have a +5 version available somewhere in the game, so it comes down to personal preference - some factors you might think about while deciding are how early the eventual end-game weapon you want is available to you, and any special abilities/spell-like effects a weapon could grant you.

For example, investing points into scimitar/wakizashi/ninja-to (this is one category) might be an alright idea. In bg1 you can find two +2 scimitars, one on the roof of durlag's tower, the other in the cloakwood - but you could also potentialy steal drizzt's +3 and +5scimitars (or kill him for them) just keep in mind that one of drizzt's scimitars requires a good alignment to use it.

Then, in bg2, you can pick up Usuno's blade +4 on watchers keep level 1 almost immediately in the game, which is a very decent weapon, doing an additional 2-20 lightning damage on each hit in addition to it being +4.
There's also Belm +2 and the Scarlet Ninja-To +3, both using the same proficiency, that give you 1 extra attack when wielded - perfect weapons to use in your offhand if you wish to dual wield.

There's a few weapon categories that are a bit lackluster, like clubs and darts - but other then that they're all free game.
Just make sure your class is actually able to make use of the weapon, and take into account any racial benefits that might make a certain weapon more appealing. For example, if your character is an elf, you get a +1 bonus to ThAC0 with swords and bows, and halflings get +1 to ThAC0 with slings.

From Bassilus you can get a+2 warhammer as well. If you're going to dual later, it's good to remember which weapon types your new class can use (though you can always reassign proficiency points in EEkeeper afterwards.

Yeah, there's a few more out there available early on, but my post was running long enough as it was. :shake:
The +2 or better weapons available early on in the game i know of are :

+2 warhammer Ashideena : from basillius in the red canyon map (south of the high hedge) does +1 additional lightning damage
+2 Shortsword : From Zargal the hobgoblin, located on the same red canyon map
+2 Long Sword : dropped when you kill greywolf on the nashkel mines map
+2 Dagger : obtained if you help hentold and kill the revenant in the Valley of the Tombs map (east of the nashkel carnival)
+2 Halberd : find the gnoll called Ingot on the Dryad falls map (east of the gnoll stronghold) insult him in dialog, then kill him to obtain it.

Then there's a few that are harder to obtain for various reasons :

+2 scimitar, Rashad's talon : In the chimey on top of durlag's tower - you need to fight/sneak your way past some doomguards and basilisks to get to the container it's located in - be carefuil since it is trapped and will fire a fireball at you if not disarmed.
+2 staff spear : again, you need to kill/sneak past doomguards to get to the succubus that carries it inside durlag's tower and subsequently kill her, she can be a tough opponent, though a 6man partyt could manage.
+2 dagger of venom : Does an additional 6 poison damage per second on hit. can be bought at Taerom's in beregost but is very expensive. 12,000 gp+ even with 18+ charisma.
+3 quarter staff : Can be bought from the inkeeper at ulgoth's beard - not tough to get, but very expensive, again easily 10,000 gp+ evewn with maxed charisma.

There's more +2 weapons out there, but they are either very hard to get to, like the +3 two-handed sword and +2 mace located in the 4th basement level of durlag's tower, making it unfeasible to rush them.
Others are simply not available early on because you need to unlock certain locations to get them, like the +2 two-handed sword spider's bane (cloakwood) or the battle axe +2. (baldur's gate)
