Plot wise, the bandit camp is up next. Either head off to feldeposts inn to find the bandit contact there, or find the bandit group in larswood/peldvale and pretend to join up with them to find the location.

Personally, before continueing on with that part of the main plot, i'd clean out the areas around nashkell/beregost - there's plenty of experience and good gear to be gathered there.

Well, i don't know which items you do or don't know about, or what items you'd want for the class you're playing.
I'll just list the most obvious items that are nearby and good to have.

Gibberling Mountains - ring of fire resistance hidden in a crack in the cliff. (+40% fire resistance)
Fire Leaf Forest - scroll of cloudkill hidden in a hollow rock to the north edge of the map.
Firewine Ruins - gauntlets of weapon expertise on meilum on the east side of the map. (+1 damage, +2 Thac0)
Dryad Falls - the gnoll named Ingot to the northwest of the map carries a +2 halberd. you can only get it if you insult and subsequently attack him. (though i've never tried pickpocketing him)
Red Canyons - You can get two +2 weapons here, a shortsword +2 from the bandit hobgoblins in the middle of the map, and a warhammer +2 from basillius. the syumbol on basilliu s also nets you an easy 5000 gold if you turn it in.
Shipwreck's Coast - agree to help the sirene here to kill the ogre mage to gain the helmet of defense. (+1 all saving throws bonus and +20% resistance to fire, cold and electric magic)

Mutamin's garden might be a nice area to clear if you have a form of protection from being turned into stone - those basilisks net a ton of exp.
The same goes for the Fishing Village, those Ankhegs net a ton of exp and are easy to clear if you have ready access to sleep either via spells or the wand. The shells sell for 500 gp a pop at taerom back in beregost as well.
Other areas to consider would be the gnoll stronghold and the lighthouse map and grab the Tome of Leadership and Influence & Manual of Bodily Health respectively for the +1 to constitution and charisma.

Another reason to go to the lighthouse map is because those sirens and flesh golems net a fair amount of xp. That is usually my first stop after Candlekeep (mostly for the +1 CON tome).

The area with the basilisks is a good place for some extra xp, though getting the protection from petrification can be a bit tricky. There's a ghoul on this map that can help you with that, as you can convince him to help you and he's immune to petrification. Note that he does turn hostile after a certain while.

Going to Durlag's Tower early is difficult, but will get you a fair amount of xp from doomguards (I think) and some basilisks on the second floor (outside). Also there's a tome of wisdom on the third floor. I tend to save going to the basement levels until later (if I bother at all), but the upper levels are worthwhile to go to earlier as well.

It shouldn't be that tricky to get protection form petrification, if you have a spellcaster around you can simply memorize the 1st level spell.
And if you don't, you can buy some of the potions of mirrored eyes for the same effect. Thalantyr has 3 of them for sale, and another 4 of them can be bought at the inn at ulgoth's beard.

The tricky part is mostly in getting a spell scroll for it, either one for a mage or one for the green protection type scrolls. The potions are more readily available in many stores, but last for only a short time.

Also I tend to solo quite a bit, which means I often have to rely on scrolls and potions.

Thalantyr at the high hedge sells the (mage) scroll though ? I'll agree that the green scrolls are harder to come by, but if you're going solo the potions should tide you over well enough.

Eh, I'm stingy, so I tend to not like the fact that I need so many potions for one area. Even for the four basilisks on the exterior of Durlag's Tower, I'd typically need two potions. The whole area with Mutamin, I'd need a whole lot of potions, or about two green scrolls of protection. Mage spells are fine and well, but more often than not, I don't even have one in my party at that juncture.

I've never seen the point in being stingy with my gold in the game - you'll have collected plenty of it by the end of the game that will go unused anyway.
Heck, if you are running a solo character with thief levels, you can just steal the potions. failing that, you can sell some expensive items and steal them right back from the shop for all the cash you need.

    Ah, got it.
I can sort of relate to that - certain items are limited in their availability, like scrolls of protection - so you want to make sure to use them when you really need them.
As far as potions of mirrored eyes go though, you only need them vs basilisks, and there's not a ton of them to go around i the game.
The majority of them are in Mutamin's garden (maybe 8 or 10 of them spread across the map) , there's 3 on the roof of durlag's tower, 1 greater basilisk in a warehouse in baldur's gate, and 2 basilisks in the caves underneath Candlekeep.
Assuming you manage to clear the garden without wasting too many potions, you could feasibly manage to clear all of them with only the 7 potions available to you at the high hedge/ulgoth's beard inn, but i know for a fact that you can buy even more of them at sorcerous sundries in the city, as well as find a few loose ones as loot as you adventure.

At the end of the day the same principle goes - if you havn't used them at these points the potions lose any value as you have no further need of them, so you might as well burn through them while you have them.

I always used the Potions of Mirrored Eyes against Aec'Letec to ward off the death gaze.

Do thoise actually work for that as well ? i had no idea, that's pretty cool to know. I personally just use a scroll of protection against magic to tackle that battle.

Yeah, when I played I didn't realize you could dispel the effect, so I always had at least one of my guys get gibbed after Aec'Letec was defeated. Until I used the potions that is :)

Nope, we allready tralked about that one, but like henkie mentioned - if you're playing solo you do not have a caster available to cast it unless your character is some sort of arcane caster.
