    Finally someone brings this topic up!

    I've been saying this for a while- when in history has a government ever proven itself responsible enough to have such knowledge and hence power over it's citizens without oversight and protections? It is telling, to me, that as our civil liberties are eroded more and more it is becoming increasingly risky to embarrass those in power. What is happening to Bradley Manning, as well as Julian Assage and now Edward Snowden (along with lesser known figures) is simply beyond the pale. They raise legitimate concerns that the public absolutely should know about and rarely if ever have I heard it argued that anyone has been harmed due to their information, especially Manning and Snowden's leaks. Obama has been really abhorrent to me, as someone rather far to the left as most people here should know, due to his atrocious record on civil liberties. The NDAA, more prosecutions of whistle-blowers than ever before, continuing the process of once highly-illegal spying on pretty much everyone. It's a sad day when I name Rand Paul as the most sane person in congress right now.

    As a Swede I feel I must nuance the picture of Assange. It is possible that everything is a massive conspiracy to get him orchestrated by the CIA but I actually think it is quite likely that he behaved less than chivalrous to a few women on a PR trip here and they pressed charges and the Swedish police wants to hear his side of the story. Following the debate I get the impression that quite a few people couldn't care less whether he is has done something or not and the definition of rape seems to be hazy. For some people it seems to be "I like Assange and what he has done so whatever he has done it can't have been anything bad and if it was it was the women's fault". Listen to what his old co-workers from Wikileaks has to say about him, it is not flattering. You can do great and important things and still be a douche. My stance on Assange is that CIA didn't need to plot his downfall, he seems to have been perfectly capable of doing that himself.
