I'm looking at which Windows 7 version I should get with my new computer and I'm wondering if there's any point in going for the Pro version... I looked at the comparison charts and the only Pro feature that I might end up using seems to be the Virtual PC software, which requires the Pro licence. I don't know if I want to waste €40 on something I might never actually use though.

Those of you who bought the Pro version, are you actually ever using any of the Pro-only features?

    Ultimate :-)

But yeah, the Virtual PC and Windows XP mode is probably the most significant difference. So if you do not need it Home Premium might be the better choice.

I have the Home Premium and haven't felt I needed something else.

Be careful with whichever you choose. I've had it for a few months now and recently it's had some problems. When I open my laptop the screen freezes. Also, When I first turn it on, everything loads as normal and then the damn thing freezes again.
After a bit of checking around and asking various people, it turns out that one of the updates can cause this. It's starting to put me off Windows full stop!

I haven't noticed anything like this, but in my experience, if you start having random crashes, something is usually wrong with the hardware. On the other hand, this sounds quite specific, so something may have gone wrong with your installation after all. Note that it could be Windows, but just as easily it could some other program causing this.

Regarding choosing between Windows 7 Home Premium or Pro, I don't rightly know. I have Ultimate because I could get it for a good price and don't have any real experience with any other W7 version. But I know that in XP Home edition there were several things that I did miss, mostly the administrative tools which allow you to start and stop services at will. That's why I decided to go for at least Pro when I needed to switch to W7 (or rather, when I needed to switch to 64 bit). I don't rightly know if Home Premium actually lacks this feature or not, but it did in the times of XP.

Other than that, the comparison charts really don't show any reason not to get Home Premium instead of Pro. I have heard from many people that you should stay away from the Starter edition because it lacks too many features. But normally only netbooks have this edition (and still you should stay away from it, even with a netbook).

I've already checked it out hun and it's definitely caused by one of the Windows 7 updates. It doesn't affect everyone though and it's not all the time.

Can't you uninstall specific Windows updates separately?

Yes you can. Go to Programs > Programs & Features in the control panel and click "view installed updates" on the left. Then you can right click specific updates and uninstall them.

The XP mode isn't very useful, so I'd go with Home Premium every time.

I agree. I have the Pro edition, but never use its features.
