    Bin Laden didn't simply "die." He was executed, for his terrorist acts. Justice has already been carried out, outside a court of law.

    But okay, this just sounds like some red-tape being reported on that sounds more shocking than it actually is.

    It is not impactual in the long run of things. We have already offed him. His backers hate us for it no matter what we do now, so what's the point???

    I think this is equivalent to "closing the case." It's just red-tape. It probably didn't even warrant an article to be written about it, but some "creative" reporter slapped a thought provoking title on what is no more than a routine process that occurs in the event of death. And now we're all chatting it up like it matters. It doesn't, you're right.

    I believe the same thing happened with Ken Lay of Enron fame. After he died they had to formally dismiss the charges against him.

    I thought Ken Lay died after he was convicted, but before he was sentenced. So while he never went to prison, I don't think the charges were simply thrown out.
