Ok, this is really odd. My computer has been running just fine. I downloaded Speccy to keep tabs on my temps. Well, in the RAM section, it says I had 2 sticks of 2GB running in single channel mode. :skeptic:

My first thought was :bs: . But I took a peak inside, and sure enough, I had a stick in the wrong slot. So I moved it over so the two sticks could play in dual-channel happy land.

Well, Windows and Norton apparently didn't like that one bit. I was getting BSOD's at the login page, so shortly thereafter. On the rare occasion that I was able to get to the desktop, Norton would cry foul and say that my Intrusion Prevention software had some error and that I needed to re-install the software. I'm back to running both sticks in single-channel mode, but I've noticed that my boot time had added about 5-10 extra seconds since moving them back. :bad:

My question is, why would moving a stick of RAM over a slot cause a BSOD in a system that's been running fine for years? And WTF is up with Norton?

Also.....I've got the upgrading itch again, but I don't want drop my 775 mobo until Intel has a chipset that natively supports SATA 6Gbps and USB 3.0. So I was thinking about upgrading my C2D E8400 to a C2Q Q9650 ($330) and adding two more 2x 2GB sticks of RAM....at which point I would probably do the bi-yearly reformat of my HDDs. That should hold me over until the 2nd half of 2011.
But until then, what do you think is going on?

It's just a Norton thing instead of a Windows thing. Virus scanners can do terrible things to your computer. Once I even made the mistake of installing two virus scanners. I could no longer even get to the login screen after that.

During startup, the intrusion prevention software makes a hash of the executable and compares it with something that is generated during the installation and stored somewhere on your computer. If they are not the same, then the executable has been modified. In your case it is not an issue with malware, but that the hash generation algorithm depends upon some hardware features (e.g. whether you are using single or dual-channel). This time the hardware is different, so the produced checksum is different.

My advice: ditch Norton. My other advice: uninstall Norton, move to dual-channel and then reinstall it. That should get Norton to regenerate the checksum and work fine with dual-channel mode.
