So I've got a shiny new Win7 Pro DVD that's just begging me to install it...but I've just got one more treaty to hand out before it's time to fight the blight...I think... So obviously, I don't want to lose mu saved game. So there are a few things I'm concerned about:
    • What files do I need to copy over form XP to Win7 so I can continue with my game?
    • I'm going from a 32-bit XP to a 64-bit Win7. Do you foresee any problems there?
    • Anything else you'd like to add to make the switch easier? :hmm:

Asking this makes me feel noob-ish...

When I installed Windows 7, I did Upgrade. It doesn't format your PC that way :)

You can't upgrade from XP to Win7. You have to reformat.

Kit - I went from a 32-bit version of XP to my new copy of (64-bit) 7 Pro in my new build. I was playing TES IV and saved the entire saved file, and once I had the system up and running, I just replaced the entire saved file and it worked perfectly, with no issues. I don't kow about DA, since I have not started it yet. I received a copy of DA for Xmas, along with the new computer parts, but have not started it yet.

Now that I have the system up and running, with my programs installed, and it appears very stable, I am going to start DA today. My advice would be to replace the entire file, since that seems to work with some games, even switching the OS.

I haven't yet had any problems with it, so I can't see why not.

Let me know how the 5850 works. I am considering going two 5750 or a 5850.

With Dragon Age, all you need to do is to save your folder

    C:bad:Users\...\Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age -> characters

to some back-up location. I also save my screenshots folder, which is in the same folder.

Just do a fresh install and then copy them back. Very unproblematic.

Which means I'll rely on my own advice :)

Well...considering it's been about 7 hours since you posted that, I can only assume that something went horribly awry and your computer is now a brick.

Do I dare? Hmmmmm......why the hell not. I've got my backups ready. I'll install Win7 in ~30min and let you all know how it went. If you don't hear from me in awhile...it's because I'm on my way to Germany for some vengeance. :p

7 hours? Only? You see, I wasn't idle: I built the SSD into my box, which took me some time, because I also cleaned out the dust from the fans. Then I installed Windows 7, went shopping, watched the Great Dictator, went to the corner shop to get some beer, had a late lunch while I installed Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Borderlands with patches, DLC and backed up save games.

And then I started playing Dragon Age. I have just stopped playing Dragon Age after I re-installed the game on my fresh Windows 7 installation. Works like charm.

Did you have to use an adapter of some kind? Or did you use a standard 3.5 space for it? I heard that a regular 3.5 doesn't secure the SSD drives.

It's dangling between my two HDD. I bought an OCZ mounting bracket, which is nice - but incompatible with my Antec cases' drive mountings. Screw diameter is too small. As I don't move my computer around, and as SSD are shock resistant I don't worry.

New RAM (6GB now  ), ATI 5850, and Win7 are all installed and working great....but now I'm restoring over 300GB of music, movies, pictures, and documents. Its going faster than the time it took to back everything up...but its still taking forever. :bad:

I want to play DA already!

    ---------- Added 3 hours, 54 minutes and 43 seconds later... ----------

/me shudders with delight and drools

I just played about 30 minutes with the resolution at 1440x900, texture and graphics detail maxed out, and 8x AA...and Fraps said I was pulling 60fps durring battle. And my new 5850 never turned in to a jet engine...in fact, I couldn't hear it over my CPU fan. :jawdrop:  :jawdrop:

Munchkin, all I can say is: get it, you will not be disapointed. :thumb:
