Can you complete the thieves' quest without confessing to Edwin?

[IMG] I made an error doing the thieve's quest, and forgot to save between finishing off the wizard and ending the quest, so it's a bit of a restore. Is it possible to get the proof of Mae'var's treachery after playing dumb with Edwin and having him send his goons to attack you? He teleported out before I could finish casting a horror spell (I was afraid he'd have turning contingencies if I tried to spook him), so there was no way to kill him once things went hostile.

I'm sorry, I clicked on the wrong forum. It probably belongs in the SoA forum even though I do technically have ToB installed.
[As the forum description indicates, you should post here if you have ToB installed - BTA]

Good question I don't know the answer to. Since Edwin said he has the key to the safe (which you need access to in order to find the letters to the night knives) you may want to see if you can kill him and loot his corpse for the key. Not sure if this is a possibility but it is worth a try.

One of the things that may make this possibility more likely is that you didn't mention any party members getting killed right off the bat. This is a good sign as it may mean the unkillable (with anything but ability score drains) version of Arkanis Gath didn't pop up like he sometimes does when Edwin (Bloodscalp, or a fair number of the Shadow Thieves) get hostile to you. This version of Arkanis has a magic sword you cannot pick up even if you kill him that both hastes him and kills party members with one hit (unless said party member has protection from magical weapons cast on him or her).

If you get the key off Edwin I would say make a run for the safe on the 2nd floor and take the contents to Bloodscalp as usual. If this doesn't work you can get the less than best ending for the subquest by just killing Mae'Var and telling Bloodscalp-he is mad and doesn't give you the usual reward but it finishes the subquest if there is no other way to.

I don't think you'll be able to finish the quest, at least not by proving Mae'Var is a traitor.

Since Edwin has fled with the key I think you have one of three choices.

    1) Just go down and kill Mae'Var anyway. I think afterwards when you speak to Bloodscalp he'll be pretty angry with you (He won't attack), but it does finish the quest.

    2) Use the console to give yourself Mae'Var's key (Or I suppose the letter)

    3) Leave it :p

Sorry it's not a huge help Baldur's Gate 2 was the ort of game where if you made a mistake, it would punish you. :)

I once ,..in tales old..., succeeded in opening the absolutely unlockpickable chest with a knock spell... but that sounds like something that gets fixed with a fixpack early and never tried again.

Yeah, a patch fixes this. If you watch a BG2 speedrun, this is how they do it. They just cast Knock on Mae'var's chest to get the documents.

Edwin escapes via teleport before I can get off a spell. I've been unable to kill him before he escapes.

Knocking on the chest doesn't work, apparently my fully patched copy of the game with ToB and Baldurdash has "fixed" this "problem". I've tried both spell and scroll versions.

I also had problems with that quest, i misplaced the transfer letter blodscalp gave me (Xan keeps dying 'cause i play insane so i think he dropped it) so i can't even begin it. anyway, yesterday i was searching in shadowkeeper for the letter and saw under misc the key you need: it's called stgh like Mae'Var's Strongbox Key. if you want to get it thru the console the code is EDWINKEY
