This would never fly in the US, but a father tried to hire a prostitute for his 14-year old son as a gift. The father said, "My son is still a virigin and I wanted to help him out with that."

Unfortunately, the prostitute his son selected turned out the be an undercover police officer.

Remarkably, the man was spared jail time by the judge, who cited the father's "excellent character".

You cannot make this stuff up.

Although I also see a bit of a double standard - this would never have been OK if it was his daughter we were talking about. But trying to get your teenaged son laid is evidently A-OK!

You're right about the double-standard part, though I'm not so sure about the "this would never fly in the US" part. There are some real idiots over here.

I think this could happen anywhere and not just in Europe, that said I am somewhat impressed about the farther thinking my son is 14 and still a virgin, most people I know didn't loose their virginity at least until a couple of years later.

also I got the weird thought, that at least here in Denmark, the prostitute would have gotten the worst punishment, since she would face charges for having sex with a minor, since a child isn't considered sexual mature until the age of 15. So in the eyes of the court, the prostitute would have had sex with a child... I suppose the same would have happened in the US? wouldn't it be statuary rape?

Well, since the prostitute was actually an undercover cop, I don't think anything was actually performed. However, here in the US, the father could be charged with soliciting sex involving a minor (or something) I think.

NOG is right - she didn't actually have sex with the kid - and the father was charged and found guilty of soliciting sex with a minor. He just wasn't jailed for it.

I can remember coming home late one night after a date -- we actually fell asleep in the car (nothing happened, we were just holding each other listening to the radio). I walked in at 1AM with my hair all disheveled and my dad just gave me the biggest grin, as if he was just so proud of me at that moment. I didn't have the heart to tell him the truth.

In my neighborhood we had a lot of massage parlors (i.e., brothels) and I knew of many dads who took their teenage sons to have a "professional" introduce their boys to newfound pasttimes....

Aldeth, what exactly is the "Only in Europe" bit here? That he got let off?

To expand further on T2's post, I've seen a documentary about one of Vegas' legal brothels a few years ago... they showed all sorts of people coming in. One of them was a mother who drove her teenage son there as a birthday present, helped him pick a girl and encouraged him VERY suggestively, all the while happily chatting to the camera about how much fun her son will have and how good it'll be to have a professional show him the joys of sex and "make him a man" and so on...

So, yea, the story you report is hardly shocking. :shake:

[IMG] relax, it's just old farmer's culture:
In the dutch countryside, it used to be very common practice. If a boy was getting too distracted by these feelings, and couldn't work the fields properly, the dad, or older brothers, would take the kid into town to 'get his pipes cleaned'. It would certainly kill any feelings of puppy love, and the kid would focus better on his work.

I'd be very surprised if this didn't cross over into the States. Hicks and hillbillys probably do the same.

Pretty much - Americans are really way more uptight about this stuff, and I doubt the guy would have avoided jail time here. There's lots of other places where the guy wouldn't have avoided jail time either, like in the Middle East and Africa. So while it may not "only" happen in Europe, I think the odds of him avoiding jail time would be higher in Europe than just about anywhere else.

How come Aldeth is allowed to get away with "only in Europe"? If any of us say "Only in the USA", we get beaten up for being anti-American.

This is one of the things that amuses me the most about the whole 'back in the day there was less lasciviousness' shtick the fundies have going.

It interests me that the article says they agreed a $30 fee...

The law is very liberal here, and jail sentencing is on a major decrease - because the prison system is severly underfunded

Aldeth, this is cultural. You say it wouldn't fly in the US and at the same time, a European would probably show the US as the place where that kind of thing came from.

First offence generally tends to end up suspended. In some countries that's written in the law. Similarly is previous good or bad opinion taken into consideration. So formally it wasn't improper. Question is, was it good enough substantively.

And got to consider it wasn't the same as hiring a kid out as a prostitute. That would, hopefully, never end up in a suspended sentence.

That is utterly insane. I don't personally know of any father who would do this for his son. That doesn't mean said fathers don't exist, but it must be people with a whole different mindset than the people I know.

I would argue that he should have got some time actually in jail. As for here in North America, if he had money, he could hire a good lawyer and he'd likely not see the inside of a cell at all. No money -- no luck -- he'd be in jail for about a year, I'd hazard. He'd also possibly lose his kid.

its a suspended sentence, if he does anything within the suspended period he will get this sentence plus what ever sentence he gets for what his new offence

its not that insane, only 3 years ago 14 was the legal sexual age for a boy in the UK

I thought I was being complimentary. I think Americans are way too uptight (as I already stated) about anything having to do with sex. (I also stand by my claims that if this was his daughter instead of his son, the guy would be in jail.)

@chev - yes, there are definitely major differences in the legal system and the culture of the US versus Europe as well. I also have already conceded that I was pointing out that this may happen in other places other than Europe, but I was not trying to negatively insinuate anything about Europe by saying so.
